The Task Force was formed in June 2013 to assist the Vice President for Human Resources in the development and communication of recommendations to improve the University’s Total Rewards Program. Total Rewards includes all benefits and compensation for faculty staff and retirees who are benefit eligible. Specifically included in the Task Force’s charge were:

-retirement plans

-medical insurance plans

Ancillary insurance plans (long term disability, dental, vision, life/ad&d)

-tuition reduction/educational assistance programs

-post-retirement medical insurance plans

-staff time off programs

Recommendations were as follows:

1) Treat pay and benefits as interrelated parts of the overall Total Rewards strategy.

2)Establish a benefits rate cap.

3)Increase flexibility within the Total Rewards programs.

4)Utilize medical plan options to encourage healthy behavior and efficient use of healthcare services.

5)Leverage marketplace opportunities for retiree medical benefits.

6)Evaluate additional retirement plan options.

7)Evaluate staff time-off plans.

8)Invest in communication and education about Total Rewards that promotes informed decision – making.

Betsy reiterated these recommendations are, “not about cost cutting” but rather, “trying to balance how we keep people here and how we balance costs.”
