Chorleywood Christmas Festival and Late Night Shopping Evening Friday December 2nd

With the schools breaking up a whole week before Christmas the festive season seems to be approachingeven faster than usual this year.

On Friday it is Chorleywood’s late night shopping evening. As well as the shops staying open late there will be entertainment for all ages on the two stages.

This year 1st Chorleywood Scouts will beselling hot chocolate as well as our famed mulled wine. The evening starts at 4pm with music and singing from local schools so come and find us outside the post office and enjoy a glass of the best mulled wine in Chorleywood or warm yourself up with a cup of hot chocolate.

We do need extra help this year because it isa longer evening andalso because we are selling bothmulled wine and hot chocolate. Please look at the attached rota and then let me know when you can help. Why not sign up with a friend for more fun. If you can spare just half an hour that would still be great.Donations of mince pies are also welcome on the night.

Campfire carols Monday December 19th

The year finishes with carols at Chorleywood Campsite. Children with parents and family should meet at the Memorial Hall carpark at 6.30 to walk to the event. The bonfire will be lit at around 7pm. The service will be led by Malcolm Hazell and will be followed by hot snacks, hot chocolate or mulled wine. Please come and join us. N.B.In the event of bad weather the event will take place at Chorleywood HQ.

Easy Fundraising

I know that we have missed Cyber Monday but I am sure that many of you will be shopping on the internet for your Christmas presents. Please can you remember the scouts and shop via“Easyfundraising.”

“Easyfundraising” provides a FREE service where you can shop with your favourite online stores and, at no extra cost, raise funds for our group. You still shop directly with each retailer as you would normally, but by using the links to the retailer’s online site from the “Easyfundraising” site, each purchase you make will generate a cash back donation to the 1st Chorleywood Scout Group fund. “Easyfundraising” simply records your visit to their website and rewards your selected cause if you make any purchases.

What do I do to start raising funds? The service is easy to use and it's completely FREE. To start please go to to Registerso they know who you support. Then just remember touse them each time you shop online! So far eight supporters have raised a total of over £50. Remember “Every little helps!”

SECTION AND ACTIVITY REPORTS

Many thanks to those leaders and helpers who sent in reports on their recent activities.

Remembrance Day Service – Sunday 13th November 2011(Marion Walker)

Just before 3pm, twenty Scouts from Chess Troop, six Cubs from Thursday night and one from Friday night together with eleven Beavers, along with most of their section leaders, met in the car park at Christchurch, all in smart uniform in preparation for the service at the invitation of the Royal British Legion. They were all a credit to the various sections on this important and solemn occasion. Special thanks to the standard bearers Freddie Edwards from Chess Troop with the Scout Colours, Joshua Bowman from Thursday Night Cubs with the Cub Colours and Will Day with the Beaver Colours. They also presented the Colours with the Royal British Legion. Thanks also go to Toby Matthews, Alex Martin and Mark Rout for assisting with the collection in aid of the Royal British Legion.

Green Beret(Rob Cunnings)

Last weekend eighteen Chorleywood Scouts gathered at HQ to depart for what turned out to be a very cold Green Beret. The weekend involved completing various day and night bases, an assault course and an orienteering course. This is always a challenging event, but the scouts that attend always have good fun and take away many memories. We had three teams entered this year finishing 96th, 86th and 40th out of 134 teams. Many thanks to all the leaders and scouts that made this weekend a success.

Eagle Cubs (Richard Hall)

Although Eagles Pack have not completed any major events this term (apart from our 7 mile night hike earlier in the term)it has been an autumn of firsts. We have continued our tradition of being outside at every opportunity with a night hike andpioneering eveningin the Chess valley where the cubs followed written instructions along the river and through woods back toChenies Manor. It coincided with Bonfire night so we had some great views of fireworks thrown in as well.

The cubs have been flexing their muscles to complete their Fitness Challenge Badge. Two evenings of pulse raising, heart stopping activities have been combined with cubs’ personal involvement with clubs and team sports so that to date overfifteen cubs have passed. Another first is this week we are cooking at the HQ to inspire our young chefs. We have already had an evening with thepenknives and matches out and survived that without incident (almost) so I will report back on hopefully what will be agastronomic feast worthy of the likes of Masterchef.

As the end of term draws closer, we will be losing all four of our excellent sixers. Freddie Causton, Henry Kergon, Archie Moore and Felix Vine will all bemoving up to Friday Scouts and are currently on track tocomplete their Silver Chief Scout Award. They have done anoutstanding job and we willdefinitely miss them. However, we already have four newcomers lined up so we will be keeping our numbers atthirty four. Finally, two parents are worthy of a mention for stepping forward to help behind the scenes Lynne Moore withCRBs and the parent helper rota and ClareTatham with badge work. A big thank you to them and all the support we get from our parents each week. Season’sgreetings from Eagles Pack.

Thames Scout Troop(Jamie Mitchell)

Since re-starting our weekly meetings in September, we have been busy with a variety of topics, which have included: Revising 1st Aid Skills; Knotting; Swimming and generally having fun. We’ve been up to the District Camp site for Back Woods Cooking and we are looking forward to a night hike around London (when we hope to be amazed by the Christmas Lights and night life on display).

Although we will not be meeting over the Christmas holiday period, we have been busy planning a packed program which will run from early January 2012.

We plan to run our Troop Camp over the Jubilee Holiday at a venue near Exeter, and have recently been advised that 5 cubs are expected to join us in January, with a further 9 cubs before Easter. This will bring the troop numbers up and will hopefully put the then older members of the troop (all by then aged 12) into a position of responsibility which we hope to build upon.

Explorers(Paul Sutton)

Explorers enjoyed a good weekend walking in Brecon Beacons. Saturday was thick cloud all day - great for practising those essential navigation skills. On Sunday we enjoyed the odd view as all completed Pen y Fan, the highest peak.Next weekend it is off to the River Dart for some White water kayaking.

A district Explorer/Network team with three Chorleywood members won the County Navigation competition - Peak Assault, a great achievement. James Foulger has completed his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award and will hopefully be followed by several more who just need to complete the paper work Tuesday evenings have been very busy - night hike, swimming, climbing skills, Quasar, Young Leader Training.Other memorable days were spent White water paddling on the River Wye and climbing in the Peak District.
