Religious Studies Department Marking Policy 2014-2015

This policy is intended to be used in conjunction with and not instead of the whole school marking policy. At all times the whole school policy must be adhered to. This policy has been written in order ensure that marking remains of an excellent standard in a department that teaches full classes across all year groups, and to recognise the demands upon time that this brings.

It is expected that exercise books are collected in and marked at least once every four weeks or sooner for an assessed piece of homework. For classes who have more than one hour a week this should be reduced to every fortnight.

It is essential that all homework tasks are marked carefully, using the literacy codes. Pieces used for formative assessment must also inform next steps of progress using WWW/EBI. Every pupil must have at least one piece of work formatively assessed each half-term.

Classwork tasks do not have to be marked as rigidly as homework tasks, however it is essential that classwork is clearly labelled. The class teacher should tick and initial the page and correct any obvious errors, but it is not essential to use the literacy symbols or WWW/EBI.

Assessed pieces of work at KS4 should be given a GCSE grade, this applies also to essays given for homework tasks. It is important to inform pupils how to progress and WWW/EBI should be applied here too. Please note that there is a generic target sheet for KS4 which will aid this process. At KS3 homework should be given an effort grade of A B C or D where A denotes excellent, B good, C satisfactory and D incomplete/poor effort.

It is essential that books are kept neat and tidy, with rulers used to underline headings. Every pupil should have a target sheet glued into the inner-cover of their exercise book detailing their target grade or level, and a record of assessment and tracking levels to date. There are different sheets for KS3 & KS4.
