General description

The 12 digit display on this silver coloured calculator means it's ideal for performing longer calculations. It announces all button presses and calculations in an American female synthetic voice and the large, well spaced buttons are printed with easy-to-see contrasting black text. The digits on the LCD display measure 1.3cm (0.5 inches) high.

Orientation

Front

On the front of the calculator you will find the number pad, function buttons and LCD display.

The LCD display is rectangular in shape. Hold the calculator in front of you so that the LCD display is positioned at the top.Below the LCD display are six rows of buttons.

The top (first) row of buttons are all narrow, oval shaped and are silver in colour. From left to right these buttons are AC (all clear), CE (clear), ERASE (an arrow pointing to the right), RPT (repeat) and VOL (volume).

The next five rows of buttons are all rectangular shaped with rounded corners and are either white, light grey or dark grey buttons with black text.

The second row, from left to right are % (percent), MC/SET (memory and set button – set time and alarm), MR/ALARM ON/OFF (memory button), M-/DOWN (memory button and down) and M+/UP (memory button and up).

The third row of buttons, from left to right are: 7, 8, 9, TIME/12 24 (switches to display the time) and ALM (alarm button).

The fourth row of buttons from left to right are:4, 5, 6, ÷ (Divide) and × (Multiply).

The fifth row of buttons, from left to right are:1, 2, 3, the top half of the large + (plus) button and - (Minus).

The last (and sixth) row of buttons, from left to right are:0, 00, . (decimal point), the bottom half of the large + (plus) button and = (Equals).

Turn the calculator over so that the buttons are facing down and the LCD display is still at the top.

The top third section is raised and houses the battery compartment. The battery cover is located on this raised area, towards the left edge, and is denoted by a small catch at the bottom of the cover. To the right of this are a series of small holes which is the speaker.

Getting started

Inserting batteries

This calculator is powered by two AA batteries.

Locate the battery compartment cover which is on the back of the calculator. Along the bottom edge of the cover is a small catch. Use your finger to push the catch in and lift the battery cover off and place down next to you.

Insert both batteries with the negative (flat) end resting against the spring within the battery terminal.

Replace the battery cover and clip back into place.

Using the product

There are typically five buttons per row on the calculator, and they shall be referred to in the following section as first-fifth button (based on orientating from left to right on each row).

This calculator can be used with the speech turned on or off.

Turning the speech on

The speech has three volume settings: high, low and off. To adjust the speech, keep pressing the VOL(volume) button (fifth button, top row) until you find the level you would like. The high and low settings will be denoted by a beep (of high and low sound) and the speech off setting will produce no audible output.

Setting the time

Please note: There are no talking prompts for setting the time, only audible beeps, so sighted assistance may be required.

Press the Time button (fourth button, third row) to access the time mode.

Press again to change between 12 and 24 hour display.

Press the SET button (second button, second row) to access the time set mode. The hour will begin to flash. If no buttons are pressed within 10 seconds of pressing the set button the calculator will beep once and revert back to the previous setting. If this happens, press the SET button again.

Press the UP (fifth button, second row) or DOWN (fourth button, second row) buttons to enter the correct hour. Press SET again to confirm and the minute will begin to flash. Press the UP or DOWN button to enter the correct minute. Then press the SET button again to confirm and to exit the time set mode.

Setting the alarm

You can set up a daily or one time alarm and have a choice of four different alarm tones.

Please note: There are no talking prompts for setting the alarm, only audible beeps, so sighted assistance may be required.

Press the ALM (alarm) button (fifth button, third row) to access the alarm mode.

Press the ALARM ON/OFF button (third button, second row) to choose alarm on or off.

Press the SET button (second button, second row) to access the alarm set mode. The hour will begin to flash. If no buttons are pressed within 10 seconds of pressing the set button the calculator will beep once and revert back to the previous setting. If this happens, press the SET button again.

Press the UP (fifth button, second row) or DOWN (fourth button, second row) buttons to enter the hour you would like the alarm to sound. Press SET again to confirm and the minute will begin to flash. Press the UP and DOWN buttons to enter the minute you would like the alarm to sound. Press the SET button again to save and exit the alarm set mode.

Press the UP and DOWN buttons to listen to the four alarm tones. When you hear the tone you wish to use, press the TIME button (fourth button, third row) to save and exit the alarm mode.

Silencing the alarm

When the alarm sounds, press any button to turn it off.

The beep alarm tone will sound for one minute unless it is turned off manually before this time. Each of the three melody alarm tones will sound for 40 seconds unless it is turned off manually before this time.
