Register Litho Over-sizesCapacity With Giant KBA Rapida 205 81-inch Press

New Jersey-based large format printer offers unique UV coating and drying to North American retailers, chain stores customers

KBA North America in Williston, Vermont, is announcing that Register Litho, a Clifton, NJ large-format printer, has added a KBA Rapida 205 six-color 81-inch with inline UV coating and dryers as well as extended delivery, the first in operation of its kind in the Northeast U.S.These unique features allow Register to produce display and oversize jobs on substrates from 80 # coated to 48 pt board with much faster productivity.

“By adding the KBA Rapida 205 press in a specially-built climate-controlled room along with separate customer-approval rooms, we are investing in our future as well as our customer’s future,” says Joe Fishman, president of Register Litho. “The inline UV and aqueous coating and infrared dryers allow us to produce a large format sheet completely dry and ready for the bindery or finishing area. Plus we are offering our customers the ability to use different types of shines: full, satin, matte, or spot to draw attention to their large format jobs. By having the UV coating and IR dryers inline on our press, we differentiate ourselves from our competitors.”

All the bells and whistles

The new KBA Rapida 205 81-inc sheetfed press, awarded the prestigious PIA/GATF InterTech award, features a maximum sheet size of 59.5" x 81" running at a speed of 9,000 sheets per hour (sph). The Rapida 205in operation at Register Litho provides a range of features, such as a fully-automatic plate changer with lifting facility for loading and unloading of the plate holders on the tower guards, automatic blanket and impression cylinder washing systems, an in-line anilox coating system and IR, UV, or hybrid drying options. It also includes KBA's Densitronic quality control system and in-line perforating and slitting to the press. The ACR automatic camera register control system provides a simple method for operators to obtain fast color registration. The ACR uses a camera, an integrated PC and corresponding software. The camera is used to determine any register differences, and calculated correction values are then transmitted to the lateral, circumferential and diagonal register systems on the individual printing units.

“Our print broker and retail industry customers are quite savvy and are seeking the printer who can produce a high-quality, fast-turnaround oversized image that will catch the eye of the consumer,” explains Gene Markowitz, Register Litho’s vice president. “To remain competitive we are the first printer in the country to install this large KBA press with all the bells and whistles that will continue to attract customers who are on the cutting edge of new trends. For example, adding different UV and aqueous coatings on large format jobs is a growing trend. Being able to expertly turn an oversized job around in a day—getting it in the morning and finishing it later that day—is a feat that not many printers can accomplish. We can.”

Markowitz stresses that Register Litho is dedicated to remaining a trade printing company and protecting its trade customers. In order to service its retail customers better, SignSource, a direct sales arm of Register Litho was created. While both companies utilize the abilities of the KBA Rapida 205, the two do not compete against each other.

Looking forward: a second shift and second press

“At the moment, our KBA Rapida 205 is producing live jobs on one shift,” says Fishman. “But after additional training, weexpect to be able to quickly ramp up to a second shift on the press. We anticipate enough growth within the year to also add a new KBA Rapida 162 64-inch six-color sheetfed press.”

Recently, SignSource met more than 300 potential customers at the GlobalShop show, the largest retail design and in-store marketing event held at McCormick Place West in Chicago on March 18-20, 2008. In addition to introducing the new KBA and highlighting the firm’s printing capabilities, SignSource held a drawing for visitors to its booth. The winner of the Mac Notebook valued at over $1,300 was Lawrence F.of Georgia.
