Recycling Program Manager (Program Manager)

The University of Iowa,Office of Sustainability is seeking a highly motivated person to lead campus-wide sustainability and waste diversion efforts.

The successful candidate will have a deep knowledge of the principles and practices of sustainability, strong communication and outreach skills, experience with institutional recycling, composting and/or waste management processes and methods, and experience in leading planning efforts with a variety of stakeholders and building consensus in a larger, institutional setting.

Duties and responsibilities will include leading and growing the Eco Hawk program, the UI’s signature sustainability outreach and engagement program for students, faculty and staff; leading the communications and outreach strategy of the Eco Hawk program as a vehicle to build a culture of sustainability at the UI; leading the strategic planning process to create the vision for an effective and successful recycling program designed to meet the UI’s waste diversion target; educating the campus community regarding the campus single-streamsystem and Tiny Trash; employing and coordinating work of the Office of Sustainability student team; collaborating with building and custodial staff in different administrative organizations (UI Housing and Dining, UI Athletics, UI Hospitals and Clinics, etc.) in implementing recycling optimization projects; collecting, managing and reporting data and financial measures; facilitating sustainability programs and events; supervising student interns; coordinating with students and student organizations to facilitate student projects and events; and representing the UI Office of Sustainability on campus, community, state and national associations and committees.

Required qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in sustainability-related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3-5 years of related experience in sustainability-related education, public outreach, and volunteer coordination
  • 3-5 years of related experience with recycling and/or waste management processes and methods
  • Experience in leading planning efforts with various stakeholders and building consensus in a larger, institutional setting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of staff at all levels of an organization

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience with recycling, composting, or waste reduction programs.
  • Experience with peer-to-peer engagement programs
  • University experience
