Contract:6 -12 months, potential for permanent role

Salary:38,000 – 42,000

Background

Social Action for Health is a community development charity that aims to reduce health and social inequalities. We work alongside people from diverse communities enabling them to take more control of their health and wellbeing. Our work is grounded in the experiences, aspirations and abilities of local people. We currently operate across London with some 30 staff and 100 sessional workers - local people supported and trained by us to work with communities in their mother tongue, including Bengali, Somali, Turkish / Kurdish, Congolese, Gujarati, Urdu, Arabic, and English.

SAfH are currently going through a change and restructuring process. We are looking to recruit an interim Director to support the senior management team. This is to replace a Director who is leaving at the end of April and to support covering a period of parenting leave being taken by another Director.

This role is interim, however is likely to lead to a permanent Director role within the new staffing structure.

Job summary

We are looking for an experiencedsenior manager to join the small senior management team at Social Action for Health to support and develop teams of people through a period of change that will strengthen the resilience and sustainability of this unique organisation and enable us to demonstrate the depth and impact of our work.

The post-holderwill:

  • Lead the effective and efficient delivery of funded programmes, ensuring that we: meet contracted outcomes; sustain excellent relationships with key stakeholders including funders and local people and complete timely reporting internally and externally.
  • Provide leadership, support and development to delivery teams of staff, sessional workers and volunteers through a period of restructure and transition at SAfH. This includes:enabling people to lead in their areas of responsibility; embedding shared working practices, including effective use of IT and process management; ensuring learning across the organisation and supporting implementation of Investors in People.
  • As part of the SMT, contribute to the strategic development of SAfH.
  • Secure additional fundraising to support the strategic development of SAfH, linked to programme delivery areas.

Duties and responsibilities

  1. To lead programme delivery including: Self Management, Maternity Engagement, Peer Leadership and Research in the Community.
  2. Ensure that effective contract management and project planning result in: target outcomes/objectives being met, timely reporting, effective budget controls and excellent stakeholder relationships (funder, participants, sessional staff, contractors, wider community, partners, referring agencies etc.).
  3. Ensure learning from grass roots delivery informs and influences: strategic development and cross team working at SAfH; professional practices within SAfH; the wider community sector and commissioner/funder priorities.
  4. To identify and secure new business opportunities, ensuring that learning from grassroots delivery underpins effective fundraising and income generation.
  5. To provide individual 121 and team building support to the Programme/Opperational managers to enhance their ability to: lead in their areas of responsibility; develop their professional practice; enhance project planning and delivery skills; programme manage; fundraise; manage people and support staff.
  6. To work with the CEO and trustees to build on our strong values framework to codify clear statements of purpose, core values and code of conduct to underpin strategic development and business planning. This involves engaging staff, sessional staff, volunteers, members and other stakeholders.
  7. To work with the CEO and trustees to revise policy and practice frameworks and implement these throughout the organization to ensure: safe and risk managed working practices; embedded equal opportunities; shared IT working practices/effective confidentiality practices and IIP.
  8. To work with the CEO and Finance Director to ensure effective financial management of the organisation.
  9. To work with the CEO to ensure that the work of SAfH is effectively communicated inside and outside the organization.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

  1. Management qualification or relevant experience
  2. Evidence of ongoing personal/professional development

Experience/Knowledge

  1. Successful management and delivery of programmes delivered in the community, ideally with community development component and in diverse urban context. Minimum 3 years.
  2. Management of diverse teams of staff, ensuring personal/professional development and team building enhance people’s ability to lead in their work. Minimum 3 years.
  3. Implementing and embedding robust monitoring and reporting systems that demonstrate impact.
  4. Engaging and involving stakeholders throughout processes of change and/or service design.
  5. Understanding of the social determinants of health and how this relates to community health development and reducing health inequalities.
  6. Understanding of key governance, policy and good practice frameworks to ensure charities operate effectively, ethically, socially entrepreneurially and within the law.

Capabilities and skill

  1. Skilled at influencing, including and negotiating.
  2. Exceptional communicator, able to express clearly and effectively in writing and in person to diverse audiences. This includes being a skilled listener and facilitator.
  3. Excellent numeracy skills, able to analyze and interpret data and manage budgets.
  4. Self-motivated and self-organised,able to lead by example, supporting a team of people to operate effectively within structured systems and processes.
  5. Excellent problem solving skills as well as able to support others to develop solutions.
