/ School Improvement Plan /

Presenter:

/ Ms. Weller
Discussion:A handout of the School Improvement Plan (SIP) was provided for attendees. It was explained that the county provides an Internet-based program to create the plan and it is user-friendly to plug in best practices throughout each section. Each section was briefly discussed.
Section 1: A review was given of the schedule of department meetings held with the intention of data analysis, curriculum, student goals on common assessments. The meetings vary in topic and are split by subject. It was suggested by Ms. Provost that Department Chairs should be invited to SAC meetings to discuss the methodologies and programs put into place as a result of their meetings. Ms. Weller will follow up with chairs.
Section 2: Response to Interventions (RTI) Process was discussed as to how the process begins and that parents, teacher, guidance can start the process for an at-risk student, academic or behavior. The RTI team meets weekly on Wednesdays to discuss plans and progress, with each tier implemented lasting 6-8 weeks.
Section 3: The accreditation process was discussed and that the staff must comply with county requirements to show evidence of having an optimum relationship with the parents and community. There were several line items included as part of common practice outreach, as well as several programs designed to engage parents and community.
Section 4: A review of the school band (the grouping of similar schools with similar student count and demographics statewide) was discussed for gauging progress by metrics. The school also had split the staff in to groups to come up with strategies on how to meet metric goals. Presentations are made by chairs to the staff on how to meet goals. These goals are fluid, as is the SIP, and it was addressed that more communication should be provided to parents to assist with expectations and results. Several parents addressed the seemingly low goals for passing rates on the standardized assessments. It was reiterated that not all students are taking the standard middle school assessments, and that the metrics were based more on consideration of the lower performing students. Faculty also discussed the changing nature of the standardized assessments and that both the content and scoring system had greatly changed. A question was asked concerning available test scores for incoming 6th graders not being available. It was concluded that writing and reading scores are embedded and that no true score breakdown is provided. The metrics used to benchmark the students’ progress is from in-class assessments that are more frequent, leading up to testing. It was also discussed that all grades collaborate so that students are guided from 6th through 8th to build on skills to be proficient upon exiting middle school.
Additional Concerns not addressed on SIP: Ms. Scott discussed a gap in intervention with at-risk students, particularly young men, due to recent events at surrounding schools. She suggested some type of intervention and the group was informed that a program is in place to mentor students identified as showing at-risk behavior. It is just getting started and further details will be available as the program unfolds. Ms. Provost also discussed the upcoming event at Coral Springs High School concerning Cyber Bullying and Social Media Awareness on 10/24.

Agenda item:

/ Administrative Update /

Presenter:

/ Ms. Barnett
Discussion:Ms. Barnett stated that representatives from Administration and Guidance planned to attend the CSHS Cyber Bullying event. She also invited parents to participate. There was a reminder that Thursday, 10/27 is an early release day and Friday, 10/28 is a teacher planning day. The Wildcat Waltz fundraiser will take place on 10/27 with all proceeds going towards school technology. The event is $10 and the student must be passing all classes to attend. Spare Change for Real Change starts this week with proceeds going toward relief in Haiti. Food and clothes are also being collected. The question was asked if the school is prepared to accept donations from other organizations. Ms. Weller is to investigate and email answer.

Agenda item:

/ Title 1 Update /
