The particular duties assigned to this post are set out below. These may be reviewed and amended in consultation with the post holder in the light of any changes in the requirement and priorities within the College.
Adult Education Department
Varndean College offers a wide-ranging Adult Education Programme of coursesand Saturday workshops with flexible start dates throughout the year.We have around 50 adult education tutors currently delivering our programme. The department has been a provider for the local community in Brighton and Hove since 1990 with courses based at the Surrenden Road Campus or at the community hubs or outreach centres in the local area. It is the college’s strategic aim to maximise participation in post 16 years education through creating and strongly promoting provision that meets the diverse needs of the community.
Main Purpose of Job:
To undertake teaching and related duties in line with Varndean College requirements at varying locations within the local area of Brighton and Hove, including registration of learners, preparing them for assessment or examination and carrying out assessments as part of the course, as required.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Teaching
a)To prepare a course description for each course taught
b)Assess the needs of students and ensure that the course(s) match these needs
c)Plan and prepare teaching and learning programmes for groups and individuals, providing a scheme of work for each course taught
d)To produce and keep a lesson plan for each lesson taught
e)Keep a course file
f)Prepare homework and assignments and mark or assess as appropriate
g)Develop and use a range of teaching and learning techniques
h)Attend moderation meetings as appropriate
  1. Administration
a)To maintain the necessary administration eg course information, registers and underpinning teaching documentation ie schemes of work, lesson plans, Individual Learning Plans, records of assessments and learners progress, records of learners work, accreditation documentation in line with service quality standards.
b)Mark the college register accurately at the start of each session for health and safety, attendance and salary purposes.
c)Follow up and record reasons for learner absence and/or learner withdrawal for a course
d)Return learning agreements, RARPA forms, evaluation forms and other documentation to the Adult Education Office in a timely fashion.
  1. Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement (RARPA)
a)Assess learners’ individual learning needs at the start of the course, including any learning support and additional learning needs
b)To monitor each learner’s progress during the course using individual learning plans and provide appropriate verbal and written feedback on progress and achievements
c)Return learning agreements, RARPA forms, evaluation forms and other documentation to the Adult Education office in a timely fashion
  1. College wide responsibilities
a)Attend the annual staff induction meeting in early September
b)Support the College’s mission, values and strategic objectives.
c)To actively promote equality of opportunity with and for all learners.
d)Implement the College’s health and safety policy and procedures.
e)Attend mandatory safeguarding and child protection training
f)Participate in the College’s continuing professional development scheme.
g)Undertake such other duties as the Principal may request within reason.

Education,
Qualifications and Training /
  • Appropriate level of specialist expertise in the relevant curriculum area
  • A relevant degree and/or professional vocational qualification
  • A recognised teaching qualification/qualified teacher status

Relevant Experience /
  • Successful teaching experience or teaching practice in the subject in the post-16 sector

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies /
  • Ability to adopt a variety of strategies to suit students’ different learning styles
  • Proven ability to plan and prepare courses and lessons
  • Good ICT and administrative skills.

  • Knowledge of current issues in adult learning
