Reading with Accountability

A participation grade will be given each nine weeks regarding reading with accountability. You will be required to bring a book to class five days a week (5 points a day) and be expected to read silently at the beginning of class or when classroom work is completed. You will be required to read five books each nine weeks (length/level/amount may change this requirement). You can read any combination of genre, but need to read at least two fiction and two non-fiction out of the five. You will keep track of these books by marking in related information on your reader’s log sheet.(Located inside your class binder). Challenge yourself. Choose books that will push you into becoming a stronger reader.(You must read books around or above your level.) Check levels on LEXILE.COM. (Try to stay as close as you can with non-fiction. Fiction books have some flexibility in range)

You will need to complete one of the following for each of your five books. You may do these assignments during class in your classroom/composition notebook or email you work to me at . (Header: Title, # nine weeks, # assessment) You should only do one assessment per book and cannot do the same more than three times per nine weeks. All assignments should be a full page in length.

  1. Create 10 questions based upon your book and answer them correctly. These must be true/false, multiple choice, or short response. An answer key must be included.
  1. Write a character description for 3 different characters. Provide physical and emotional/psychological details. Also tell about a key role they played in the story. Each character write up should be on paragraph a piece.
  1. Draw a portrait of one of the characters. Write some exact quotes on the top or bottom of the page regarding the physical and emotional characteristics that relate to your drawing. Quote must be in quotation marks, and word for word from book. Excerpts must also be at least a paragraph in length (5 – 8 sentences).
  1. Write a poem(at least 14 lines) or a short story (at least two pages) similar to a major theme or situation in the book you read.
  1. After reading a book of history or historical fiction, make an illustrated timeline showing events of the story and draw a map showing the location(s) where the story took place.
  1. Take the AR test. Must take Accelerated Reader tests in class. Books read should be in reading range. Accelerated Reader tests may only be taken once, regardless of the score you receive. A passing grade is a 70 or higher. If you get lower, you will have to do another assignment to get credit for you book. Can only do one.

(Write the following information in your composition book: Number taken, number right, title of book, author, and date test was taken)

Advanced – One accountability each nine weeks must be one of the following research projects (book reports). These are in more detail and require more effort.

1)Write a feature article (with a headline) that tells the story of the book as it might be found on the front page of a newspaper in the town where the story takes place.

2)Create a mini-comic book relating a chapter of the book.

3)Write a letter (10-sentence minimum) to the main character of your book asking questions, protesting a situation, and/or making a complaint and/or a suggestion. This must be done in the correct letter format.
