11.0 / Purpose and scope
11.0.1 / This chapter provides general guidelines and instructions on choosing and recording preferred and variant names for corporate bodies, and on recording other identifying attributes of the corporate body.
11.0.2 / The chapter also provides guidelines on using the preferred name for a corporate body in conjunction with other identifying attributes to construct the preferred access point representing that body, and using variant names to construct variant access points.
11.0.3 / The chapter also provides additional instructions on names and other identifying attributes of subordinate and related bodies, government bodies and officials, and religious bodies and officials.
11.0.4 / Corporate body, as used in this chapter, refers to an organization or group of persons and/or organizations that is identified by a particular name and that acts, or may act, as a unit.
11.0.5 / Consider a corporate body to have a name if the words referring to it are a specific appellation rather than a general description.
11.0.6 / Typical examples of corporate bodies are associations, institutions, business firms, nonprofit enterprises, governments, government agencies, projects and programmes, religious bodies, local church groups identified by the name of the church, and conferences.
11.0.7 / Consider ad hoc events (such as athletic contests, exhibitions, expeditions, fairs, and festivals) and vessels (e.g., ships and spacecraft) to be corporate bodies.

11.2.0.1.1 / o  A name of the corporate body is a word, phrase, character, or group of characters by which a corporate body is known.
11.2.0.1.2 / o  For purposes of identifying corporate bodies, names of the corporate body are categorized as follows:
a) preferred name for the corporate body (see 11.2.1)
b) variant name for the corporate body (see 11.2.2).

11.2.1.1.1 / o  The preferred name for the corporate body is the name or form of name chosen as the basis for the preferred access point representing that body.
11.2.1.1.2 / o  If a body changes its name, a preferred name is chosen for use with resources associated with the new name (see 11.2.1.6).

11.2.1.4.1 / Ø  Record the name chosen as the preferred name for a corporate body applying the general guidelines on recording names given under 8.5.
11.2.1.4.2 / Ø  Record the name of a corporate body as it appears in resources associated with the body. If the name does not appear in resources associated with the body, or in case of doubt, record it in the form most commonly found in reference sources. In applying this general guideline, apply the instructions given under 11.2.1.7–11.2.1.12.
11.2.1.4.3 / Ø  For instructions on recording the names of subordinate and related bodies, see 11.2.1.13–11.2.1.17.
11.2.1.4.4 / Ø  For instructions on recording the names of government bodies, see 11.2.1.18–11.2.1.27.

Choosing the preferred name
11.2.1.5 / Different forms of the same name
11.2.1.5.1 / Ø  If different forms of a corporate body’s name appear in resources associated with the body, apply the general instructions given below. When appropriate, apply the special instructions given under a)–d) below as well. [24.2A]
11.2.1.5.2 / Ø  If variant forms[1] of the name are found in resources associated with the body, choose the name as it appears in the preferred sources of information (see 2.2.1) as the preferred name, as opposed to forms found elsewhere in the resources. [24.2B]
11.2.1.5.3 / Ø  If variant names appear in the preferred source of information, choose the name that is presented formally as the preferred name. If no name is presented formally, or if all names are presented formally, choose the most commonly found form of name. [24.2D]
11.2.1.5.4 / Ø  If there is no most commonly found form, choose a brief form (including an initialism or an acronym) that would differentiate the body from others with the same or similar brief names as the preferred name.
