6. Brief Review of Intended work:

6.1) Need for the study:

Bala is considered as the strength of the individual. It is inferred through the ability of the person to perform work. This Shareerikabala varies from person to person and in sameindividual varies with respect to his Vaya, Kala, deshaetc. The Prakriti of a human which is the peculiar type of body constitution produced by predominance of three doshasvizVata, Pitta andKapha. Such features are acquired by birth and remain with the particular individual throughtout the life1. Based on the type ofPrakriti, the Bala of the individual will be inherited.

According to Charaka, among seven types of Prakriti2, the Vata Prakriti individuals possess Alpa Bala &Ayu,hence it is considered as Hina Prakriti and are more susceptible to diseases, pitta prakritiindividuals possess madhyamaBala&Ayu and are moderately acquire the diseases, whereaskapha Prakriti individuals possess uttama Bala and Ayu hence it is praised as, uttamaPrakritiand are less susceptible to diseases3.

There is a close relationship between Prakriti, Vikara, Kala and Bala in maintaining the health and causing the diseases in a human being4.

Ayurveda explains thatVyayama is to be performed up to the extent of ones ardhashakthi, i.e.,‘half the exercising capacity’ of the individual. It can be assessed when sweat appears on forehead, arm pits and other parts of body; respiration become quick and one is forced to breathe by opening the mouth and person get thirsty5. This Test can be adopted to assess the Bala of an individual. This capacity varies in different individuals. This ‘strength’ can also be used to decide to allow a person to Exercisein particular ‘capacity’.

ExerciseToleranceTest is also used for the same purpose which is more reliable. This study is planned to ascertain theShareerikaBala of the differentPrakritiindividuals.

6.2) Review of Literature:

Ø  Charaka mentioned thrivida bala i.e Sahaja, Kalaja and Yuktikruta bala. The Sahajabala is the one which exists in the mind and body from the very time of birth6.

Ø  Charka, while explaining lakshanas of different Prakrtis, said Vatajaprakruitis persons is endowed with Alpha Baal Ayeetc, Pittajaprakritis persons with madhyamabala, andkaphajaprakritis persons with uttama bala7.

Ø  Susrutha defines prakriti as ‘‘the group of character inherited by an individual fromsukraof the parents depending upon predominance ofdosha’sprevailing at the timeof sexual intercourse9’’

Ø  Sushruta mentioned that, appearance of perspiration on nose, axilla, forehead, and in joints of the palm and feet and dryness of the mouth denotes the Ardhashakthi of an individual10.

Ø  Vagabhata mentioned, VatajaPrakriti persons are considered as HinaPrakriti, Pittaja as madhyamaPrakriti, Kaphaja as uttamaPrakriti11.

Ø  Bhava Mishra stated that, the Vayu which is situated in the hrudayamoves very fast towards the mouth, sweating occurs over the area of axilla, forehead, nose, hand, feet and joints, dryness of mouth12.
