Find Summer Fun and Adventure

- Summer camps offered through Broward County Parks -

There’s no excuse for letting your child turn into a couch potato during summer break – not when there are so many recreational opportunities out there. The Parks and Recreation Division offers several Summer Camps that emphasize a wide variety of activities for kids.

WHAT: Summer Horse Camp

WHERE: Tradewinds Park Stables, 3600 W. Sample Rd., Coconut Creek 33073

WHEN: Mondays-Thursdays, June 11-August 16 (no camp July 2-5); 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

WHO: For ages 9-16.

HOW: $300/four-day session. Preregistration required.

ETC.: Daily riding instruction (weather permitting) and other equestrian activities are included. Children must provide own lunches/refreshments. Long pants and closed-toe shoes required. Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and towel also needed.

WHAT: 4-H Summer Camp

WHERE: Camp Cloverleaf, Lake Placid, Florida

WHEN: Monday-Friday, June 18-22

WHO: For ages 8-11.

HOW: $225/4-H members, $250/nonmembers. Preregistration required.

ETC.: Fee includes transportation, lodging, food, T-shirts, and canteens. Activities include swimming, kayaking, team building, and archery.

WHAT: Science Eye Safari Camp

WHERE: Long Key Natural Area & Nature Center, 3501 S.W. 130th Ave., Davie 33330

WHEN: Mondays-Fridays, June 25-29, July 9-13, August 6-10; 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

WHO: For ages 7-12.

HOW: $250/child per week. Preregistration required. After-care (4-5 p.m.) available for additional fee.

ETC.: Topics include astronomy, geology, marine biology, paleontology, physics, and wildlife conservation.

WHAT: Nature Detectives

WHERE: Fern Forest Nature Center, 201 Lyons Rd. South, Coconut Creek 33063

WHEN: Mondays-Fridays, June 25-29, July 23-27; 9 a.m.-noon.

WHO: For ages 8-11.

HOW: $75/child per week. Preregistration required.

ETC.: Each day focuses on a different theme, with participants exploring the nature center’s habitats through hands-on experiences, crafts, and other activities.

Founded in February 1956 and accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies, Broward County Parks and Recreation Division manages nearly 6,500 acres, encompassing 18 regional parks and nature centers, six neighborhood parks, and 21 natural areas at various stages of development. Facilities include water parks, campgrounds, a target range, a stadium, a skate park, an observatory, mountain bike trails, an educational farm with stables, and a velodrome and other sports facilities.
