Today, North Carolina-based quintet Rainbow Kitten Surprise unveiled their much-anticipated Elektra Records debut LP. Produced by GRAMMY® Award winner Jay Joyce (Cage The Elephant, Sleeper Agent), “HOW TO: FRIEND, LOVE, FREEFALL” features the band’s current single “Fever Pitch” and is available now at all music retailers and streaming services (Download/Stream HERE).
Rainbow Kitten Surprise will make their late-night TV debut, performing “Fever Pitch” – which TIME called “an insidiously smooth foot-tapper” and included in their best tracks of the week –on CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, set for Friday, April 13th (check local listings). Watch the rousing companion visual for “Fever Pitch” HERE.
Rainbow Kitten Surprise will celebrate the album release with their fans, hosting an intimate performance and Q&A session at the famed Electric Lady Studios in NYC on April 9th. The event will also be livestreamed on the band’s official YouTube channel.
In addition to “Fever Pitch,” the previously released tracks from “HOW TO: FRIEND, LOVE, FREEFALL,” which include “Holy War” and “Hide,” have already been met with critical acclaim, with CLASH heralding “Holy War” as “a genre-defying fusion… Multiple harmonies coalesce into something curiously outlandish yet remarkably concise…yet completely accessible.” Watch the track’s accompanying music video on the band’s official YouTube channel HERE. Earlier this week, the group surprise dropped the emotionally charged visual companion to their electrifying track “Hide” – watch the Kyle Thrash directed visual HERE. More mini-documentary than standard music video, the 6-1/2 minute clip which Baeble Music describes as “absolutely breathtaking,” is a snapshot into the lives of four drag queens in New Orleans. The song itself – while upbeat and energetic – also carries significant weight. Frontman Sam Melo wrote “Hide” when he decided to come out as a gay man. Melo shared his personal story on the band’s Instagram – read his note in full HERE.
Hailed as one of the most eclectic and exciting live acts in recent memory, Rainbow Kitten Surprise recently kicked off their biggest North American headline tour thus far. “The Friend, Love, Freefall Tour,” which kicked off with a sold-out two night stand at Atlanta, GA’s Terminal West and travels the continent through mid-May, is almost entirely sold out, with venues upgraded in 6 cities, and second shows added in Los Angeles, New York, Raleigh, and Denver [full list of dates enclosed below]. The band will also perform at festivals across the country including Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Osheaga, Sloss and Forecastle. For complete details and ticket information, please visit
With their chilling harmonies, dynamic instrumentation, and introspective lyrics, Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s genre-defying sound takes equal influence from artists like Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon as it does Frank Ocean and Schoolboy Q. Recently profiled by The Line Of Best Fit, the digital publication referred to the band as “a five-piece that will just about blow away any expectation you’ll set upon them after hearing their name.” The Boone, NC-based band has proven an independent sensation, with over 75 million streams across digital platforms and over 45 sold out shows on their first U.S. headline tour. 2017 saw Rainbow Kitten Surprise lighting up the North American festival circuit with their always engaging live performances, including stand out sets at such events as Bonnaroo, Firefly, Shaky Knees, Hangout, Sasquatch, and Austin City Limits, among others. “Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s on stage presence and performance are second to none,” enthused The Huffington Post. “The band’s performance comes across as flurry of frenzied motion set to the sounds their own melodically guitar driven rock ’n’ roll that one simply can’t look away from.” Likewise, Paste Magazine raved how RKS frontman Sam Melo “…truly excels as a showman, selling every song with his undeniable stage presence and full-throated vocals,” and praised the band for “…earning every bit of their steadily swelling buzz.”
Rainbow Kitten Surprise is: Sam Melo (lead vocals); Darrick “Bozzy” Keller (guitar, vocals); Ethan Goodpaster (lead guitar, vocals); Charlie Holt (bass, vocals); Jess Haney (drums).
