COURSE OUTLINE:
Anatomy and Radiographic Positioning III course will be taught using lecture, lab simulation, phantom imaging, demonstration, slides, radiographic images, information sheets and the dry skull. This class teaches positioning of the patient for the calvarium, facial area, sinuses and temporal bones. This course will also provide the second year Radiologic Technology student with a basic working knowledge of pathology as it pertains to the cranium. The course presents pathologies most commonly encountered in a Radiology Department. Course content will include discussion regarding disease processes; radiographic presentation of pathology; advantages and disadvantages of various imaging modalities.
GOALS:
The Student will learn:
A. Theories and skills to perform radiographic examinations of the skull (calvarium facial bones, paranasal sinuses and temporal bones).
B. To evaluate for positioning accuracy, anatomy and pathology radiographs of the above mentioned radiographic examinations.
C. Cranium pathology commonly encountered in a Radiology Department
ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is an essential component of the course. Lack of attendance and tardiness may affect your grade. If you are absent, you are still responsible for the material covered. As outlined in the El Camino College catalog, two absences without contacting the instructor may result in dismissal from the course. Each absence will result in a 2 point penalty. Tardies and leaving early will result in a 1 point penalty. If you are late the day of a quiz, more than 5 minutes, the door will be locked and you will not be allowed to take the quiz. This is to cause fewer distractions to those who are already in the process of taking the quiz. You be permitted to enter the class when the quiz is complete.
PARTICIPATION:
Participation is an essential component of the course. Included in participation will be class punctuality, attendance, familiarity with text assignments, demonstrated ability to understand other’s comments, especially the ability to remember what has already been said, sharing materials relevant to the class and cooperation in creating a supportive learning environment. If you are not participating and disrupting or hindering the learning process you will be asked to leave for the day and will lose attendance and participation points.
OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of the course, the Radiography student will have accomplished the following with
a score of 73% or better:
A. Identify all topographical anatomy and landmarks of the cranium and facial areas.
B. List eight cranial bones.
C. List the four bones comprising the calvarium.
D. Demonstrate the four basic projections commonly taken for a routine skull series.
E. Identify and describe the special projections for the cranium.
F. Recognize and list the fourteen facial bones.
G. Name the seven bones which make up the orbit.
H. Demonstrate the basic projections for facial bone radiography.
I. Identify special positions used to demonstrate optic foramen and zygomatic arches.
J. Identify from radiographs and a dry skull the anatomy of the mandible, paranasal sinuses, and
mastoids.
K. Demonstrate the basic projections for the mandible and paranasal sinuses
L. Describe and demonstrate optional views for the temporomandibular joints.
M. Identify common pathologies of the cranium
N. Describe the radiographic presentation of each disease.
O.Identify the appropriate technical changes required to best demonstrate each pathological condition
STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
During class, students will be shown a skull radiograph with tilt and/or rotation positioning errors. Students will describe the positioning error committed and how to adjust the position of the patient to fix the positioning error.
ASSESSMENT: This course will require a total score of 73% or better on examinations to continue in the Radiologic Technology Program. Make-up exams will only be offered prior to the next class meeting with a 10% penalty in overall exam grade. Emergencies will be evaluated on an individual basis, and it will the sole discretion of the instructor if the 10% penalty will be enforced. The student is responsible to coordinate the make-up exam with the instructor. Quizzes cannot be made up.The course will additionally include assessments through film identification and laboratory assignments, quizzes, pre-tests and homework. Assignments must be submitted on time for full credit. Late work will not be accepted. A student must earn a 73% or better on examinations to receive a passing grade for this course, not including laboratory assignments and homework.
REPEAT TESTS: All unsuccessful tests must be retaken and passed. Any test receiving a score below 73% must be retaken and passed within one week of the original test date. This applies to BOTH written and LAB examinations. You may only repeat ONE exam during the course. (Original test score will be the recorded grade.) Students may not perform examinations covered on the “unsuccessful” test until a passing grade is obtained. If the repeated exam is not passed, a score of zero will be recorded as the original grade. In the event your final is not passed you will have to retake final and pass before the spring semester begins.
Grading Scale
A = 91-100%B= 82-90%C= 81-73%D= 72-64%F= 63% and lower
Course Breakdown:
Tests/ Quizzes = 55%
Lab Tests/ quizzes 30%
Homework= 10%
Attendance and participation 5%
Total = 100%
ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY:PLAGIARISM, CHEATING, OR FURNISHING MATERIALS IN ORDER TO ENABLE OTHER STUDENTS TO DO SO WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Such behavior violates Section I.B.1 of El Camino College’s Board Policy 5138, Standards of Student Conduct. Anyone cheating will receive zero points for that test, exam, or assignment and it will be reported to the Radiologic Technology director, which may result in further disciplinary action.
CLASS BEHAVIOR AND CONDUCT: You are expected to come to class fully prepared and able to participate. You are also expected to practice courtesy and respect at all times.No children can be brought to class and they cannot sit outside of the classroom. Behaviors that disrupt the learning process will not be tolerated. These include:
