Rachmaninoff All-Night Vigil Markings

·  The Musica Russica edition is a wonderful printing of this work. However, there are some serious issues with measure numbering. I will try to be clear where there is any confusion.

·  Notes marked with a plus sign should be sung on “oo” instead of hummed.

·  Unless I have explicitly given a breath mark, do not breathe please. There is a LOT of stagger breathing in this piece, so as you practice, work on not breathing at bar lines or at obvious places.

·  “A:” means a marking for the altos, “ST:” for sopranos and tenors, etc. Markings without any indications of who they are for are for the entire choir

Movement 1

·  Put a breath mark after the first “A-min” of the piece

·  Put a breath mark after bar 6, “Bogu”

·  Put a breath mark after the first note of bar 11

·  Put a breath mark at the end of page 2

·  Put a breath mark after bar 20 and 25

Movement 2: No markings needed

Movement 3

·  SA: For the first five bars, SA sing the alto line, splitting the notes. When there are three notes, sopranos split the top two notes and altos take the bottom note. Likewise bar 10-16. Likewise bar 21-27, and in this case, you can scratch out the soprano line, since it just duplicates the top alto line. Likewise bars 32-37. Likewise bars 42-47. Likewise bars 52-58 (crossing out the soprano line). Likewise bars 83-87 (crossing out the soprano line).

·  Put a breath mark after bars 5 and 9

·  Every time you have the word “Alliluiya” in this movement, put a breath mark after each time that word happens.
