Statistics and facts
· One in 13 people aged 50 and over are living with sight loss
· One in five people aged 75 and over are living with sight loss
· One in two people aged 90 and over are living with sight loss
· People from Black and Asian communities are at greater risk of certain eye diseases compared to other ethnic groups
· Adults with learning disabilities are 10 times more likely to experience sight loss than the general population
· Prevalence of sight loss is higher among people with dementia, especially those living in care homes
· Peoples' homes are often the most dangerous places for them, with sight loss often not recognised as a high risk
· Older people with sight loss are far more likely to have a fall, suffer from depression and become isolated
· Approximately 100 people in the UK lose their sight every day
· Sight loss is one of the top three causes of suicide amongst older people and older people with sight problems who live alone are three times more likely to experience depression as those with normal sight
· Older people with sight problems are almost twice as likely to have a fall, and have 90 per cent higher odds of multiple falls

Course aims and content
This course will provide you with an overview of sight loss conditions enabling you to provide appropriate support to people who may have sight loss.

Advanced Sight Loss Awareness (Full Day)
Course aims and content
This course will equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to ensure your organisation can meet the challenges faced by the growing population of people with sight loss.

· Common sight conditions and the ageing eye
· Identifying people with sight loss
· Sight loss and mobility
· Hallucinations and sight loss
· How to access local and national support for people with sight loss
· Guiding techniques
· Issues and challenges faced by people with sight loss in everyday living
· Confidence in communicating with people with sight loss
· How to provide clear written communication for people with sight loss and alternative formats
· Registration of sight loss and its benefits
· How to identify and remove trips and hazards
· Demonstration of products that support independence in everyday living such as food and drink preparation; eating and drinking; leisure; support in taking medication and handling money

Sight Loss and Housing (Full Day)
Course aims and content
This course will provide you with an overview of common sight conditions and enable you to apply key design principles that will promote the safety, independence, dignity and wellbeing of your tenants and residents.
The workshop is recommended for anyone involved in the Welsh Housing Quality Standards (WHQS), the Development Quality Requirements (DQR), Disability Facilities Grant and Physical Adaptations Grants.

Dementia, Sight Loss and the Built Environment (Full Day)
Course aims and content
One in five people aged 75 and over are living with sight loss, rising to one in two aged over 90. The prevalence of sight loss is higher among people with dementia, especially those living in care homes
When sight loss and dementia occur together this can have a profound negative effect on people’s safety, independence, dignity and wellbeing.
The course considers the combination of dementia and sight loss and how good inclusive design principles can help to alleviate the issues presented by dementia and sight loss.

Learning Disability, Sight Loss and the Built Environment (Full Day)
Course aims and content
People with learning disabilities are 10 times more likely to have serious sight problems than other people. People with severe or profound learning disabilities are most likely to have sight problems.
When sight loss and learning disability occur together this can have a profound negative effect on people’s safety, independence, dignity and wellbeing.
The course considers the combination of learning disabilities and sight loss and how good inclusive design principles can help to alleviate the issues presented by learning disabilities and sight loss.

Access Auditing for Sight Loss and the Built Environment (Half Day)
Available to delegates who have completed the Sight Loss and Housing one day course.
Course aims and content
This course will apply the principles learned from the ‘Sight loss and Housing” course and provide you with the tools to enable you to identify and record access issues and apply Visibly Better design principles.
This course will be on site to provide practical, hands on experience.

· Identifying standard design issues in and around everyday environments.
· Analyse lux levels within environments
· Evaluating areas for colour and tonal contrast
· Applying aesthetic and practical solutions to real life environments.
· applying cost effective inclusive design recommendations
· Developing user-friendly action plans to assist budget allocation and prioritise maintenance schedules

Accessible Gardens (Half Day)
Course aims and content
This course is available to those who would like support in providing a well-designed garden that is accessible to all. A good design will include features that stimulate all of the senses which can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities.

Tenant Assessors (Full day)
Course aims and content
Tenants and residents can become ‘Champions’ of inclusive design and can actively support housing providers with real solutions to everyday design problems which can affect people’s safety, independence, dignity and wellbeing.
The Tenant Assessors workshop will help tenants, residents and staff to work closer together for the benefit of all housing tenants and residents.

Cancellations
Cancellations must be received in writing or via email. Full fees are payable if cancellation occurs within 1 week of the event, 50 percent is payable if less than two weeks notice of cancellation is received.
