Whole Herd TPR FAQ

Q: How do I enroll in the TPR program and have a cow herd inventory generated?

A: Contact AHA for more information. If interested, request a current dam inventory. Complete the inventory form for all cows and breeding-age females expected to calve in the next 12 months. For each animal inventoried, assign a herd ID and list its registration number, its name and the date calved. Designate each female as either fall or spring calving. Mail completed inventory form to the AHA and retain a copy for your records

Q: Why are my owned animals and Whole Herd TPR to-do lists empty when I log into MyHerd.org?

A: When you log into MyHerd.org and you don’t have owned animals or data in your to-do lists, check your browser compatibility with the recommendations below.

1) PC (Windows) — Please use Google Chrome or Internet Explorer

2) Mac (Apple) — Download and install Google Chrome and then log into MyHerd.org.

Q: I haven’t received my spring 2016 herd inventory. How do I request an inventory to update?

A: If you didn’t receive an inventory update online or by mail, the reason is probably that you are currently non-compliant in the Whole Herd TPR system. Please contact the American Hereford Association (AHA) customer service department. Staff will help you find what information is overdue, and then they will generate your spring 2016 herd inventory.

Q: Is there a way to link my child’s account to my main ranch membership with AHA? I want to be able to register her calves and have them be included in my herd.

A: Accounts can be linked by going to Hereford.org and completing the Member Relationship Development Form (Form 11). The form is found by clicking the “Member Service” tab then click “Rules and Forms”. Submit the form to the AHA records department or e-mail it to , and the AHA records department will make the proper account adjustments. Once the accounts are linked, you may begin reporting information as one herd.

Q: How do I register calves with multiple owners through MyHerd?

A: Multi-owned animals can have no more than four owners. Once you have completed the calf details, please add additional owners by clicking the search tool (magnifying glass). This will prompt a box for you to search and select your multi-owner. Make sure to add yourself as a new owner, as this is what MyHerd recognizes as the owner(s).

Q: I sold a cow, but she keeps showing up on my inventory. Why didn’t she automatically come off when I transferred her?

A: If a female or male is listed on your inventory and is no longer in your possession, then a proper disposal code and date must be reported to remove the animal from your inventory. When a female or male is sold with papers, AHA does not automatically remove the animal from your cow herd inventory, because we don’t know if you plan to register future offspring (possible embryo transfer [ET] calves). If you would like to remove the female or male, assign the “T” disposal code, sold with papers, to remove the animal from your inventory.

Q: Does a performance breeder have to register every calf to have EPDs?

A: The Whole Herd TPR system doesn’t require every calf to be registered but they have to be reported. You can upgrade an unregistered calf to registered status later. It’s important to report all live calves so that each cow on inventory is given credit for producing a calf.

Q: I have fall ET calves to register, and I don’t own the donor dam. Do I need to add the donor dam to my fall inventory?

A: No, you do not have to add the donor dam to your inventory, but you will be charged a cow inventory fee when you register the ET calf.

Q: Can a multi-owned dam be on my inventory and another current owner’s inventory in the same season?

A: Yes. Multi-owned females should be kept on inventory if an owner plans to register calves out of them.

Q: Is there a way to submit records electronically?

A: Yes, MyHerd.org is the AHA’s online registrations system. For more information, send your member number to .

Q: I am using MyHerd, and I am a performance member trying to complete my calving records. How do I report a crossbred calf out of one of my registered Hereford cows listed on my TPR inventory?

A: As a performance breeder it’s important to give credit to each cow on inventory which calved out. For cows bred to a sire of another breed, report the calf as unregistered and leave the sire field blank. MyHerd will process the calf’s record and display a warning message saying the sire field is empty; click the override button to complete the calf’s record.

Q: How do I change my registry type from pedigree to performance?

A: Contact the AHA customer service department to enroll your herd in the Whole Herd TPR system. The department will need to know what calf crop you want to start with and your calving season.

Q: Is a birth weight measurement within 24 hours of birth the standard for the Hereford breed? What are the consequences of missing a birth weight?

A: Yes, birth weight should be taken within 24 hours of birth. Birth weight is an optional trait, but for any birth weights to be used, you must report all of them. Partial reporting will result in none of the birth weights being used.

Q: As a performance member, is it required to turn in weaning weights for embryo transplant (ET) calves?

A: Weaning weights are only required from ET calves if they are reported out of a “known” Hereford recipient cow; in other words, the recipient cow is registered and enrolled in a breeder’s current TPR cow herd inventory. ET calves out of “unknown” recipient cows are not required to turn in weaning weights for TPR compliance. HW

Q: When should the actual weaning weight be taken?

A: The actual weaning weight should be taken between 110 and 300 days of age. Animals weighed outside of this age span will be marked irregular for weaning ratio.

Q: Why is “feedlot” not utilized as a valid disposal?

A: The disposal code 2 – sold for feeding should be used to indicate the animal was sold to a feedlot.

Q:If calves are sold before they reach a year old, how do I report a yearling weight?

A: When calves are sold before they are old enough to collect a yearling weight, a disposal code should be reported in place of the weight, providing a reason they left the herd (T – sold with papers, 1 – sold for breeding, 2 – sold for feeding, etc.).

Q: I keep receiving yellow failed calf recording papers in the mail because the herd IDs I have provided on my registration applications can’t be found. Why can’t the records department just look up my animals by tattoo number?

A: Only Whole Herd TPR participants are allowed to use herd IDs in place of registration numbers because they maintain an active herd inventory and each animal enrolled on their inventory has an assigned herd ID recorded in the performance system. Breeders not participating in the performance system don’t maintain an active herd inventory, so their calves are registered with pedigree information only; therefore, the records department doesn’t have a record of what each animal’s herd ID is. Technically the records department could look animals up by tattoo number, but more than one animal could have the same tattoo, and the wrong animal could accidentally be selected as the dam or sire. If you wish to use herd ID numbers rather than registry numbers for dams and sires when reporting your calves, you must enroll your herd in the Whole Herd TPR system with the AHA customer service department

Q: Why don’t I have ratios on my calves after I recorded their weights?

A: Only compliant Whole Herd TPR breeders will see this information. The calf crop must be analyzed to calculate this data. Visit Hereford.org/schoolofmyherd for a step-by-step tutorial.
