Public OutreachDepartment Internship: Photo Archive Management

B’Tselem engages in robust public outreach and advocacy within Israel and in the international arena to raise awareness of the occupation and the subsequent human rights violations in the oPt. Public outreach strategies include B’Tselem’s renowned video materials (both raw footage and short documentaries), a constant presence in Israeli and international media, a vibrant social media presence reaching millions of people, and multiple presentations and field visits for visiting groups.

One of the main tools the public outreach department uses is photos. B’Tselem has a huge archive of photos from the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, taken by our field researchers and volunteers. Unfortunately, these photos have not been systematically catalogued for many months. There is a massive backlog due to technical issues caused by the fire in our office in January 2016. This makes the work of the department much more difficult, as the ability to locate relevant photos for publications is of utmost importance for the daily functioning of the department.

The intern accepted for the position will be tasked with the project of cataloguing B’Tselem’s extensive collection of still photos, per set criteria. Much of the data for each photo may be missing, and the intern will need to obtain the missing information from relevant staff members – mainly B’Tselem’s field researchers and data coordinators. It is important that applicants fully understand that thistask may be painstaking and highly technical. You should not apply for this position if you are looking for experience in research, writing or advocacy work. On the other hand, the intern will be given full responsibility for the project and will be expected to be highly independent, pro-active and reliable, contributing in a very substantial way to the efforts of the department.

Required skills and qualifications:

  • Fluency in Arabic and English are a must for this position - due to frequent communication with B’Tselem’s field staff. Hebrew is an asset.
  • Strong commitment to human rights work.
  • Strong organizational skills, obsession for detail, thoroughness.
  • Ability and motivation to obtain information and collect missing data.

This is a full-time position based in Jerusalem, offered for a minimum of three months.

To apply, please send the following form, along with your resume, to Shirly Eran, B’Tselem webmaster:
