Psychology - A Way to Make a Difference[o1]

Title Goes Here

According to Wikipedia, Psychology psychology is the study of human and animal behavior (cite source). As far back as I can remember I have always wanted to study human behavior. As a child I loved to observe others, and now I enjoy encouraging others, so early on, my career skills were being cultivated. To become a psychologist has been my dream since high school,[o2] but sometimes life’s plans are altered or put on hold until later in life. Psychology is fascinating, never exact; rewarding, professionalism and takes a tremendous amount of patience with self and those who are seeking treatment[o3]. I am not sure if I have an ample amount of patience to handle this profession, but as time goes on it shall be revealed[o4]. I often ask myself, with my unique set of challenges, that I own if I can even become this great therapist who will change someone’s life for the better. In order to be driven in a profession something stirred within my spirit to lead me in this direction.[o5]

Psychology is the profession that I have chosen to help others, make a difference, and, if honesty counts for anything;, to figure out my own problems. My story starts like many others, I suffered childhood trauma and sought the treatment of a therapist who has helped me in unimaginable ways, which has ultimately improved my quality of life. I decided that if my therapist could help me to live my best life through this trauma in my life then I may be able to help someone else who may be suffering in silence like I suffered for so long. At this point in my life I am still on the same mission to consistently treat clients and assist in improving the quality of their lives. I want to serve this world in a capacity that will help others recognize and treat their mental and emotional illnesses. To complete this calling life experiences play a huge roll in shaping me into who I have become to accomplish my career goals.

Every experience that happens in life should be an opportunity for improvement whether in one’s career or in everyday life. In my case, my life experiences have shaped me. I have worked in the medical industry, customer service, and the insurance industry. I have had direct patient contact through my entire career and I’m[o6] always searching myself to try to enhance or make their experience better for having come in contact with me. Once I was laid off from my job in 2009, I volunteered at a school with high- school- aged students and discovered that I loved it and wanted to do all that I could to assist in changing the circumstances for children in urban areas. As mentioned earlier I am interested and totally intrigued with the study of human behavior and volunteered as the school’s parent liaison that encompassed multiple duties. The responsibilities included directly meeting with parents and students to brainstorm ways to increase parent involvement to create a strong support mechanism to ensure student’s academic success. I also assisted in planning events and workshops pertaining to selecting new principals, budgets and meeting goals of completing 85% of Free free and rReduced lLunch aApplications. My positions and especially my volunteerism haves given me experience that has allowed me to work one- on- one with individuals and families and also provide resources to meet their needs. This experience has allowed me to take a realistic look into what is needed in my direct urban community and how the need can be met. I enjoyed each and every moment of the work but as I return back to the world of academia, how will I decide what my area of concentration will be in the world of Ppsychology?

My career plans are somewhat undecided; however, I have narrowed my choice between pPsychological Ccounseling and Fforensic Ppsychology. I am still not sure of what my choice will be but I am certainly enjoying and learning from the classes that were chosen. If I decide to concentrate in Ppsychological Ccounseling, I will apply with Baltimore City Public Schools to become a school counselor. If my area of expertise becomes fForensic pPsychology, thean I would prefer starting my career with local or federal law enforcement agencies. Before my career path takes a positive turn, I have to first graduate and before I graduate I must journey through Psychology 200 (Introduction to Professional Practice). I have discovered this is one of the most important classes that will be included on my graduating transcript.

Psych 200 as it is fondly known is quite a challenging class. Upon arriving at 5:30 pm, I did not know what to expect but once the first class came to an end I knew that this class was going to be one of the most beneficial classes that I would take during my next two years at the University of Baltimore. This class simply teaches written communication using the APA format (American Psychological Association) and allows professional communication in the world of pPsychology. This class will strengthen my ability to communicate with peers and allow better communication with clients.

In conclusion, there is nothing more interesting than the study of human behavior, I am currently undecided about my Ppsychology concentration but leaning toward counseling or Fforensics. Psychology is the perfect career fit because of both personal and professional experiences. Finally, the classes that I have chosen will give me the perfect mix that is needed to jumpstart my career. All of the classes are designed to give me the edge that is needed to go out into the world and make a difference. I plan on becoming the best pPsychologist that I can be and change myself as well as others for the better to impact society in a positive way.
