TEXT: Gravetter, F. & Wallnau, L. (1999)Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences (5th ed). New York: West.

(Optional STUDY GUIDE to Gravetter and Wallnau) (Some have found it really helpful)

GOALS:This course is designed to help you understand the principles and concepts underlying the use of statistics. We will cover descriptive and inferential statistics, and you will be expected both to understand and to apply various statistical techniques. In addition, you will learn how to use the statistical computer package, SPSS for Windows, in lab.

EXAMS: Exams will consist of multiple-choice, matching, true/false, short answer and problem questions. Calculators will be allowed, but all work must be shown. Emphasis will be on concepts and correct use of formulas (a formula sheet will be given) rather than numerical answers. (Math errors only merit a .5 pt deduction). Exams will focus on the chapters covered since the last test, but the final will be partially cumulative. Exams will include material covered in lecture, laboratory, text and handouts.

We are aiming for mastery of the material, so a re-take exam will be given after the 3 regular exams. Students will take the better of the two grades (original and retake) for the first two exams, and will take the average of the two grades (original and retake) for the last exam, or the original grade, if it is better. These exams will be given in the second half of lab. You will be responsible for making up the lab activity/worksheet that you miss by taking the exam. (It is to your advantage to use the retake as an emergency backup, not a routine event, because you will fall behind in the new material). If some emergency should arise on the day of an exam, I need to receive an e-mail or voice mail message BEFORE the scheduled exam, or you will have to depend only on the retake for your grade.

FEEDBACK forms:There will be 7 feedback forms in the course of the summer on which you will indicate how comfortable you are with the material and which concepts are the most and least clear. These will be worth 2 pts each. I will count 6. If you have all 7, I will use the 7th for extra credit.

GRADES: Grades will be based on a total of 377 points - Exam 1 (60 pts), Exam 2 (50 pts), Exam 3 (65 pts), Exam 4 (60 pts), Final (65 pts), Lab (65 pts). Feedback forms (12 pts). Letter grades will be A= 350 pts; A- = 339 pts; B+= 328 pts; B= 313 pts; B- = 301 pts; C+= 290 pts; C= 264 pts; D= 226 pts; F= below 226 pts.

LAB: Emi Furukawa is completely responsible for the laboratory, quizzes and lab grades, which will total approximately 17% of your class grade. You are expected to attend the lab session in which you are officially enrolled.

HONOR CODE:All provisions of the GMU Honor Code will be followed in this class.
