PEWAUKEE, Wis. – Terry McGowan, Wisconsin Operating Engineers President/Business Manager, will be honored as the Innovator of the Year for his demonstrated leadership in education and workforce development. The award will be presented by the Daily Reporter on October 19th in Milwaukee as part of the Annual Newsmakers of the Year Award program, recognizing outstanding individuals in Wisconsin’s building industry.

Terry McGowan, President of the Wisconsin Operating Engineers, is credited with recognizing that “Wisconsin must focus on increasing education and job opportunities for the next generation.” Concerned with the growing demand for construction trade professionals and the lack of Career & Technical Education (CTE) in high schools, the Wisconsin Operating Engineers committed to make a difference in Wisconsin as a partner in Destinations Career Academy of Wisconsin (DCA), a tuition-free online public charter school (grades 9-12) of the McFarland School District that is focused on CTE.

The Wisconsin Operating Engineers led the coalition of industry and educators to develop “this revolutionary new school that helps meet our state’s critical workforce development needs and prepares our young people with the knowledge, skills, and training needed to access the many available technical and high-paying jobs that help our state grow.” One of DCA’s most innovative offerings is the one-of-a-kind “pre-apprenticeship” program, developed through an exclusive partnership with the Wisconsin Operating Engineers and Fox Valley Technical College, which provides students hands-on experience and prepares them to enter apprenticeship training to become successful operating engineers in the construction industry.

Established in 1902, Wisconsin Operating Engineers is a statewide trade union that primarily represents skilled Operators of heavy construction equipment and mechanics who service the machines. The union has approximately 9,000 active and retired members and is headquartered in Pewaukee. Wisconsin Operating Engineers also maintains district offices in Madison, Appleton and Altoona, as well as a state-certified training school for Operating Engineers in Coloma.
