/ HERODOT-EGEA Student Film Competition to promote Geography /

EGEA and HERODOT announce a great film competition for Geography students. There are two entry categories, short movies and short animations. Exciting prizes will be awarded for the best movie and the best animation.

The aim of the competition is that European Geography students should produce a short movie or animation that promotes Geography to specific target audiences and demonstrate the contribution that Geography makes. It should consider the significance of Geography and the importance of geographers in understanding different issues that the world is facing. These may be considered at local, regional, national or international scales. The film may be about the promotion of Geography as a school subject, an academic discipline, an important matter for society or about the promotion of geography graduates among employees. The target group for the movie will be up to the contributors.

Movie submission:

·  Deadline August 15th 2007

·  There will be two categories: films and animations

·  Movies should be in English or English subtitled

·  Maximum length of a film is 10 minutes and not bigger than 100 MB.

·  Movies must include a ‘screen’ mentioning the competition and HERODOT and EGEA. Probably in the title screen or in the credits.

·  Videos should be uploaded in YouTube and contain at least the following tags: geography, EGEA, HERODOT.

·  Participants should submit the entry form by email to Karl Donert () before the deadline

·  Participants should link to their movies on the EGEA website. Movies will also be linked from the HERODOT website. A special video competition topic will be directly accessible from the EGEA and HERODOT homepages.

Prizes

There are prizes for each of the two film categories, movies and animated movies.

The lead student from each of the prize winners will be invited to attend the Big Hope conference in Liverpool in June 2008 see http://www.hope.ac.uk/thebighope/, or HERDOT annual conference (http://www.herodot.net) as part of the Liverpool 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations, where the winning films will be shown. Travel from within Europe, accommodation and meals will be provided. ESRI software and books will also be prizes for the winners. Other prizes will include GPS, pen drives, webcams etc.

Only one entry is permitted per team. The deadline is August 15th 2007, 17.00 GMT.

Award Criteria

A jury will choose the winners. The jury will consist of Karl Donert (coordinator of the HERODOT network) Maria Attard (leader of HERODOT thematic pillar group about the promotion of Geography) and Vita Valiunaite (former EGEA chairperson).

The movies will be judged on the following criteria.

·  Persuasiveness

·  Impact on the target audience

·  Attractiveness for a wide audience

·  Ability to explain what geography is and its value

·  Artistic quality

·  Number of views on YouTube

·  Potential to use the movie as a promotion tool for Geography

Films are likely to be shown at EGEA, HERODOT and other international conferences. All entrants must therefore accept to allow EGEA and HERODOT to use their movies for the promotion of Geography.
