Projects with NetLogo: Designing and Constructing Models with Multi-Agent Languages

Assignment #4

• Modified NetLogo model Project

This week you are asked to finish up your modified NetLogo model and web page. Please respond to Josh’s comments and make the requested changes to the model and web page. This includes adding comments to the procedures and adding a discussion of the changes you made and their consequences to the web page. In addition, run a BehaviorSpace experiment on your model. Write up an analysis of the BehaviorSpace runs and include it on the modified model page (under the heading “model analysis”). In your analysis, describe the various “behavioral regimes” that result from exploring parameter space. Try to explain the emergent properties of the model runs – please refer to some of the papers you have read in this course. If you’re having trouble with making this work, email the mam list for help.

• Final Project Proposal

Write up a first draft of a proposal for your final project. Final projects can be done either alone or as pairs. For an undergraduate individual, a final project consists of an original and complete NetLogo or HubNet model. For an undergraduate pair, two related but distinct models are requested. For individual graduate students (no pairs), both an original NetLogo and an original HubNet model are requested.

With regards to ideas for models, there are several resources available to you. Amongst them:

a)your own creativity and fertile imagination

b) has some other folks’ ideas

c)Several NWU faculty have projects they’d like to see done. You are free to implement one of their ideas.

Your final project proposal should include:

•Overview of the phenomenon to be modeled and/or the activity to be conducted

• Motivation – why is this worthwhile to do? Why is this a good match for NetLogo?

•Emergence - Where do you expect to see emergence?

•Design – make a first pass stab at describing:

-the agents that will be present

-the rules they will follow

-the parameters that can be varied

Please email your proposals to mam-fac by Wednesday 11:30 PM. Bring 4 hard copies of your proposal to class. We will be breaking up into groups to discuss them.

•Send email

As you work on your final project, we believe it will be very important to communicate with each other on the mam list to get the help you need. Please send two emails to the list this week.

In the first email, send either 1) an example of something “cool” you figured out how to do with NetLogo that you think others’ may find of interest or 2) a question about NetLogo you’ve been trying to figure out and could use some help with.

In the second email, pick a modified NetLogo or HubNet model from another student (or group) in the class and send comments on the model to the mam list. Of course, be respectful in your comments.
