Project Title: You’re Having a Pizza & Wings Party!

Project Description: Monetary Pricing and Consumption Quantities

Author: Deborah Doucette (North Campus Mathematics Department)

Curriculum Expert: Paul Stenzel (North Campus Culinary Arts Department)

Semester Created: Fall, 2007

A)  Basic Directions:

Print out this project and read the scenario provided. There are specific questions that you must answer based upon the scenario and pricing provided. It is expected that you will complete this project in MS Word answering all of the questions in complete sentences. In addition, leave space between your answers so that you can neatly write down all of the work you completed to draw each of your conclusions. You can use a calculator; however, you must show all of your work.

You are to complete this project on your own. This project will count as one of your test grades for this class.

B)  Things to Learn Before Starting the Project:

·  Basic Arithmetic

·  Percentages

·  Proportions

C)  The Project Assignment:

You are ordering pizza and wings for a large group of families identified below. You can assume that drinks are already provided by each of the families. You need to determine the number of pizzas and wings that you’ll need to purchase. You’ll be ordering in ‘whole’ numbers so when you do any of your calculations and you obtain a fraction or decimal, you’ll want to ‘round up’.

While choosing the varieties of pizzas/wings, you also want to compare the prices of the restaurant packages vs. purchasing individual pizzas and wings to ensure that you are making the most economical decision. However, it’s not required that you order the least expensive items on the menu. Once you’ve completed your analysis, make your decisions, and then substantiate them with sound reasoning.

Once you’ve decided on your purchase, you’ll then need to tally up the bill which needs to include the 8.75% tax and gratuity (which should be 15% of the food bill). Also, don’t forget that this restaurant has a delivery fee that is on a per mile basis. Once you’ve determined the total cost of the bill, you must then identify the amount each family must chip in to cover the full cost of the food for the party. Assume that everyone has agreed to split the bill on a per person basis (for anyone over the age of five).

Have fun with this project, you don’t have to just order cheese and pepperoni pizzas! Think of these families as your friends and make your choices based on your friends’ preferences.
