Job purpose
To secure policy impact from the University’s research as part of the Public Policy|Southampton (PP|S) team, incl. the development and delivery of key elements of the PP|S Strategy. This will have a number of elements which will vary over time, but will include: leading on the development and management of the policy fellows scheme; leading on key partnerships, such as the affiliation to the Cambridge Science and Policy (CSaP) Fellowship scheme; the provision of expert advice to University of Southampton (UoS) research staff and securing external funding through research funding bids.
Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities / % Time /
1.  / Developing partnerships:
a)  Within the University
i.  Work with key researchers and research teams on developing and implementing strategies for research impact by providing specialist professional advice and input, including support in developing Pathways to Impact for external funding bids.
ii.  Provide expert advice to UoS academics to support them when engaging with policymakers at local, regional, national and international level, and accompany them during engagement activities.
b)  With key partners
i.  Foster and maintain key partnerships, e.g. with the Centre for Science and Policy at the University of Cambridge
ii.  Identify opportunities for cooperation and joint activities with other Higher Education Institutions and Public Policy Units at other UK Universities, and coordinate within the network of Public Policy Units (UCL, LSE, Cambridge, etc).
c)  With policymakers
i.  Plan, negotiate, develop and lead the University’s Policy Fellows’ Scheme, in conjunction with the University of Cambridge.
ii.  Foster and maintain relationships with the Policy Fellows, develop opportunities for further engagement and support academics in enhancing research impact through the policy fellowship scheme.
iii.  Identity new opportunities for engagement and build relationships to new policymaking bodies at local, regional, national and international level. / 40%
2.  / Development and management of new PP|S activities:
a)  Support the Director in the development of new international activities, working in collaboration with the Vice-President International.
b)  Identify new opportunities for funded activities via grant awarding bodies.
c)  Support the Director in developing the “Membership” of Public Policy|Southampton / 40 %
3.  / Management and oversight:
a)  Lead on the financial planning and management of PP|S budgets.
b)  Represent PP|S at meetings across the University and brief UoS staff at all levels from across the University on the work of PP|S.
c)  Line manage the PP|S Project & Communication Officer and the PP|S Administrator / 20 %
4.  / Undertake other related tasks as requested and assigned by the Director of PP|S
5.  / Deputise for the Director of Public Policy|Southampton as required.

Special Requirements /
Some flexibility in hours of work is required since some policy events may take place off site and outside normal working hours (e.g. evening events in London). Depending on the candidate, there may be opportunities for some overseas travel, but this is not a requirement.

Numerate, demonstrate strategic and business planning skills and be comfortable working with a broad range of emerging technologies in the relevant fields.
Excellent IT skills with the ability to learn new applications and work with databases, report generators, Microsoft Office suites, website development and social media accounts. / First degree in relevant subject (e.g. Marketing, Communications, Politics, International Relations, Public Administration) or equivalent level qualification
