PRODUCT: Wayne-Dalton ‘FIRESTAR’ Fire Door Operators

SUBJECT:‘FIRESTAR’ Operator Models

Beginning 04-24-2008 LiftMaster began manufacturing a new fire door operator for Wayne-Dalton. The operators are being provided without a limit drive chainor door sprocket. An addendum comes with each model that details the installation and provides a list of parts that are different than what comes with the standard operators in the same family.

Wayne-Dalton provides the Door Sprocket and Limit Drive Sprocket from the door to the operator.

MODELS:

GH-FS (mechanical and logic) Addendum: 01-34411

N4GH-FS (logic only)Addendum: 01-34411

N7GH-FS (mechanical only) Addendum: 01-34411

*Wayne-Dalton provides the limit drive chain and door sprocket for the GH models.

MODELS:

H-FS (mechanical and logic) Addendum: 01-35161

*Wayne-Dalton provides the limit drive chains, special limit drive double sprocket with spacers, drive sprocket and chain. The operator drive sprocket is now provided by LM, part number 15-50B24LGH

KNOWN ISSUE

There have been several confirmed reports with Single Phase operators were the motor will ‘grawl’ excessively, get very hot to the touch and possibly blow the motor capacitor over a short period of time or pop the circuit breaker. When the start winding stays engaged for too long, this will cause an excessive draw in current and this can also be seen as a voltage drop when testing the incoming line voltage.

When this occurs, there are no material problems with the motor or logic board.

The root cause of this is that the doors are running at a slower speed (5-6” per second) than we normally require (8-9” per second). Our limit shaft is being driven by Wayne-Daltons limit drive sprocket on the door. W-D is supplying the drive and door sprockets and Chamberlain is providing the operator drive sprocket on the H-FS model which will regulate the speed of the door curtain. If the door is running to slow the likely cause is the operator drive sprocket is our standard 12 tooth in lieu of the 24 tooth that is required.

On GH-FS models, W-D supplies the door sprocket with the drive sprocket provided by Chamberlain.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

  1. Verify the size of the operator drive sprocket. (in some circumstances it has been found the installer was not using the correct drive sprocket)
  2. What rate of speed is the door traveling (Ft/Sec).

CORRECTIVE ACTION

If all the data collected from the installer indicates they have installed per Wayne-Dalton’s instructions, escalate the issue to Field Services for a follow up.
