WELCOME TO A NEW YEAR OF KNIGHT MUSIC! THIS DOCUMENT OUTLINES PROCEDURES/ROUTINES, EXPECTATIONS,AND GRADING GUIDELINES OF THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT. THIS AND ADDITIONAL RESOURCES CAN BE FOUND ON THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WEBSITE MUSIC PAGE.

PROCEDURES AND ROUTINES

ALL

ALL MUSIC BEGINS AND ENDS WITH SILENCE. RESPOND TO THE BATON/INSTRUCTOR WITH FREQUENT EYE CONTACT AND A WILLINGNESS TO LEARN.

ENTER THE ROOM WITH A MINDSET OF RESPECT FOR YOURSELF AND OTHERS.

FOLLOW EVERY SCHOOL POLICY IN THE STUDENT HANDOOK. LIVE THE CODE.

NO UNAUTHORIZED ELECTRONICS OR USAGE. PLACE PERSONAL ITEMS OFF TO THE SIDE AND/OR AGAINST THE WALLS OF THE CLASSROOM. ELECTRONICS SHOULD BE OFF AND CONCEALED AT THIS TIME.

PLEASE CHECK THE MOBILE WHITEBOARD FOR THE DAILY AGENDA AND ORDER OF OBJECTIVES. ROUTINES WILL BE INTERCHANGEABLE. PREPARE YOUR MUSIC AND MATERIALS BEFORE CLASS STARTS.

BAND

RETRIEVE FOLDER/MATERIALS FROM YOUR ASSIGNED SLOT AND BEGIN IMMEDIATELY TO ASSEMBLE AND WARM-UP WITH LIP VIBRATIONS/LONG TONES ON YOUR INSTRUMENT. TUNING BEGINS TWO MINUTES AFTER THE SECOND BELL (RESPOND TO THE BATON). SECTIONALS AND INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE AS NEEDED (PROCEDURES/EXPECTATIONS ARE OUTLINED IN CLASS).

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS CAN BE FOUND ON TOP OF THE FOLDER CABINET AND ON THE WALL ORGANIZER TO THE RIGHT OF THE SMARTBOARD. INSTRUMENTS ARE ARRANGED BY CATEGORY FROM LEFT TO RIGHT (FLUTES-TUBA).

REHEARSALS WILL BE IN INSTRUMENT(S)-MEASURE-PLAY MODE WITH LITTLE OR NO COUNTDOWN.

PERCUSSIONISTS: RETRIEVE ONLY WHAT YOU NEED FROM THE CABINET AND RETURN AT THE END OF REHEARSAL. ROTATE AND WARM UP WITH RUDIMENTS POSTED ON THE WALL ABOVE THE PERCUSSION CABINET OR FROM THE BAND BOOKLET. WE WILL USE A SHEET TO IDENTIFY WHICH INSTRUMENT/PLAYER WILL PERFORM ON EACH SELECTION. AT THE END OF CLASS PLEASE COVER THE XYLOPHONE AND TYMPANI DRUMS (JUNIOR HIGH BAND).

TUNING WILL BEGIN WITH CONCERT Bb PLAYED ON A LOW BRASS INSTRUMENT. 

ALL PLAYERS ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ROUTINE CARE ON THEIR INSTRUMENTS.

CLEANING AND OTHER SUPPLIES ARE LOCATED IN THE SILVER CABINET IN THE OFFICE. REEDS, MOUTHPIECES, STICKS/MALLETS ETC. ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT. THE SCHOOL SUPPLY IS MEANT TO COVER EMERGENCY BREAKS OF REEDS, UNEXEPECTED LOSS OF MOUTHPIECES, ETC. IT IS NOT MEANT TO BE AN ONGOING SOURCE OF FREE REPLACEMENT PRODUCTS.

CHOIR

RETRIEVE FOLDER/MATERIALS FROM YOUR ASSIGNED SLOT/SHELF AND TAKE YOUR PLACEON THE RISERS. CLASS BEGINS AT THE SECOND BELL.

ADDITIONAL RESCOURCES: RHYTHM PACKETS, WORLD OF CHORAL MUSIC,

333 ELEMENTARY EXERCISES ETC. ARE LOCATED ON TOP OF THE FOLDER CABINET. REHEARSAL WILLBE IN “PITCH AND GO” MODE. SECTIONALS AS NEEDED (PROCEDURES/EXPECTATIONS ARE OUTLINED IN CLASS).

AS THE SCHOOL YEAR PROGRESSES, ADDITIONAL MATERIALS FOR ALL CLASSES WILL BE ADDED TO YOUR FOLDER OR PLACED ON THE PODIUM AT THE FRONT OF THE CLASSROOM.

 STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KEEPING THEIR MUSIC AND MATERIALS CURRENT AND COMPLETE.

GUM IS PROHIBITED. FOOD IS PROHIBITED UNLESS PROVIDED BY THE INSTRUCTOR. PLEASE FILL WATER BOTTLES BEFORE CLASS.

PLEASE LISTEN ATTENTIVELY AND FOLLOW ALL VERBAL AND WRITTEN DIRECTIONS THE FIRST TIME. QUIETLY RAISE HAND TO ASK QUESTIONS. ASK FOR CLARITY. RESPECT THE QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS OF ALL OTHERS IN THE CLASSROOM. USE TRANSITION TIMES TO QUICKLY CHANGE OUT MUSIC AND MATERIALS. COMPLIMENT YOUR NEIGHBOR!

IF YOUR PENCIL BREAKS, OBTAIN A NEW ONE FROM THE CONTAINER. PLACE BROKEN PENCIL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE CONTAINER.

IF THE PHONE SHOULD RING THE INSTRUCTOR WILL ANSWER. PLEASE OBSERVE A MUTUAL “DULL ROAR” AT THIS TIME. YOU MAY ASK PERMISSION TO USE THE PHONE BEFORE CLASS ONLY.

ASK PERMISSION TO LEAVE THE ROOM. RECORD THE TIME OF DEPARTURE, TAKE THE HALL PASS AND SIGN IN UPON RETURN. ONE STUDENT AT A TIME.

THE INSTRUCTOR DISMISSES THE CLASS, NOT THE BELL. PLEASE EXIT ACCORDINGLY RETURNING FOLDERS/INSTRUMENTS TO THEIR ASSIGNED SLOTS.

ATTENDANCE, PUNCTUALITY, PROPER AUDIENCE ETIQUETTE AT ALL SCHOOL PERFORMANCES AND RELATED EVENTS ARE REQUIRED OF ALL STUDENTS. ONLY EXCUSED ABSENCES AND EMERGENCIES WILL BE PERMITTED AND WILL REQUIRE THE STUDENT TO PLAY/SING AND RECORD THE CONCERT MUSIC TO BE SUBMITTED TO THE INSTRUCTOR.
CONCERT ATTIRE:
BAND: WHITE ON TOP, BLACK SLACKS AND APPROPRIATE LENGTH
(BELOW THE KNEE) DRESSES AND SKIRTS.
CHOIR: ASSIGNED ROBES, BLACK ON BOTTOM.
ALL: BLACK SOCKS (GENTS) WITH BLACK DRESS SHOES
GRADING
SCHOOL CONCERTS ARE WORTH 100 POINTS.
MONTANA MUSIC EDUCATORS SPONSORED EVENTS ARE WORTH 50 POINTS.
THERE WILL BE REGULAR WRITTEN AND PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENTS/PLAYING TESTS WORTH A VARIETY OF POINTS DEPENDING ON LENGTH AND DIFFICULTY.
STUDENTS CAN EARN UP TO FIVE COLLABORATION POINTS AS OUTLINED IN THE GRADE RUBRIC.
