Location: It is behind Sunset Foods

At 1936 Green Bay Road (847) 681-7100

Driveway Entrance is on Green Bay

*The front building facing Green Bay is the District 112 Building that houses the superintendents.

*Drive past that building to the one behind it and park along the fence (sometimes, if it is filled with cars so I do park in parent’s parking because I need to use a ramp for Mickey)

Please arrive a few minutes early to allow time for sign in, etc.

2 Classrooms are visited for 30 minutes each totaling 1 hour on site.

The only on site visits which totals 30 occur on Fridays.

Bring your activity bag and mat.

Press the buzzer at the entrance and use far left door.

The breakdown for each 30 minute visit is as follows:

After you enter the building:

  • At all times, walk your dog next to the wall. Teams should not be taking up all the hallway space. Some children are afraid, and not all staff are dog lovers.
  • You need to be your dog’s advocate. Politely refuse petting by children while enroute to classrooms. The district Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents offices are in this building, so if they ask to pet, please let them.
  • Sign in and get your temporary badge from Maggie Roman, administrative assistant to principal, Chelsey Maxwell. Her office is on theright when you enter.

She will need to buzz you into the classroom hallway.

In the classroom:

  • Talk about your K-9 Reading Buddy. Show your brag book. Share some interesting details. Likes, dislikes, hobbies, health routines, whatever else is relevant to the world of 3 to 5 year old children.
  • The kids will sit on the carpet in front of you. Your K-9 Reading Buddy will sit on his/her own mat beside you, as usual.
  • For your first 2-3 sessions read one of the books about how to safely approach or treat a dog. Repetition on how to approach/treat a dog is good.
  • As time goes on, you can read other dog themed books. Keep them short. Big books with big pictures. If necessary, the teacher will translate into Spanish. Use your judgment on skipping pages or summarizing the words on the pages to match the attention span of the kids.
  • Conclude with asking the children what questions they have about the story, about your pup, etc.
  • Review the steps on asking, sniffing, going around to the side of the dog to pet (usually 3 pets)
  • The teachers and assistants help (give them the items below when you walk into the room):
  • Give the kids pawprint stamps on children’s hands.
  • Give each child a sticker with your dog’s picture on it.
  • Some classrooms are kids with attention deficit issues.

***K9RBNS will print stickers with your dog’s picture for dedicated ECC teams.
