Bus # ______

LAST MINUTE CHANGEON EXTINGUISHER EXERCISE – we will be practicing only on CO2 extinguishers. Once you have done it once (and do not short yourself – give it a good long blast), you are finished. You may get back in the bus or walk back to campus.

Bus Quiz -- You may work together and be as noisy as you need to be.

E = Excellent / BTT = Break Through Time (permeation) / ND = None Detected
G = Good / LDL = Lowest Detectable Level / NT = Not Tested
F = Fair / ppm = parts per million
P = Poor
*“rate” is permeation rate after breakthrough detection, in µg/cm2/min / Nitrile / Neoprene / NaturalRubber / PVC
60 min soak / BTT min / LDL ppm / rate* / 60 min soak / BTT min / LDL ppm / rate* / 60 min soak / BTT min / LDL ppm / rate* / 60 min soak / BTT min / LDL ppm / rate*

1. (5 pt)What can you say about the performance of these gloves with hydrazine; which glove(s) is/are better, worse, can’t tell….

2. (3 pt)Do you think these gloves above are disposable or non-disposable (re-usable)? Why?

(1 pt each, circle T (true) or F (false). These refer to while you are here at Purdue.

T F 3. You are required to fight a small fire if you started it.

T F 4. You are required to fight a small fire if there is an appropriate extinguisher near by.

T F 5. Fire extinguishers are required in every lab.

T F 6. Fire extinguishers are placed in the buildings and rooms for use by "trained individuals." (i.e. they are not for use by not-trained individuals.)

T F 7. Your employer can discipline you for using an extinguisher if you are not trained.

T F 8. Hostile fires often grow and spread far faster than people think.

T F 9. Flames do not require solid or liquid fuel to spread from room to room because gases generated by the materials already burning can spread the flames.

OVER or to next page, there’s more.

As regards numbers in the NFPA (diamond) symbol:

0 represents not harmful, 4 represents the most harmful potential

left/blue = health top/red = flammability right/yellow = reactivity

HMIS labels use same numbering scheme, and numbers are often identical. The health/fire/reactivity is from top to bottom in the rectangle.

10. (4 pt) Draw lines from left to right to match the four substance names to the labels set you believe is its HMIS and NPFA labels. (The PPE and special characteristics are intentionally left blank in these labels.)
