ABOUT DOC NYC

DOC NYC burst upon the scene in 2010 with an inaugural event that was hailed as “ambitious” (New York Times) and “selective but eclectic” (Village Voice). Based at the IFC Center in Manhattan’s West Village, the seven-day festival showcases new achievements in documentary film along with retrospectives, panels and symposia. The festival also invites documentary practitioners from other fields such as photography, writing, and performance. DOC NYC seeks to make connections that happen “only in New York.”

Last year, DOC NYC featured gala events with Werner Herzog and Errol Morris; appearances by musicians David Byrne and Max Weinberg; attendance by Barbara Kopple, Albert Maysles and Michael Moore; and jury prizes given to the films “To Be Heard” and “Windfall.”

DOC NYC TEAM

Raphaela Neihausen

DOC NYC Executive Director

Raphaela Neihausen worked for seven years at Mercer Management Consulting (now Oliver Wyman), advising Fortune 100 companies on strategic growth. As the executive director of Stranger Than Fiction, she oversaw the creation of its web site; media strategy and growth in season pass holders. Neihausen produced the documentary "Miss Gulag" (recipient of grants from the Ford Foundation and Sundance Documentary Fund) that premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and went on to be broadcast all over the world. She speaks six languages and holds a BSFS/MA from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, graduating with honors.

Thom Powers

DOC NYC Artistic Director

Thom Powers is the creator and host of the acclaimed documentary series Stranger Than Fiction that takes place at the IFC Center. Now in its 13th season, STF has earned an international reputation and featured esteemed guests such as Jonathan Demme, Laurie Anderson, Albert Maysles, and Barbara Kopple. Powers also serves as the documentary programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) where he presented premieres of celebrated titles such as "Capitalism: A Love Story," "Food, Inc," "Valentino: The Last Emperor," and "Encounters at the Edge of the World." He also curates TIFF's Mavericks conversation series, where he has hosted discussions with President Jimmy Carter, Chris Rock, Matt Damon, Howard Zinn, and others. He has taught at New York University for 10 years and recently received an award for Teaching Excellence. He co-founded the Cinema Eye Honors - an annual award for documentary excellence - now in its fourth year.

John Vanco

Vice President and General Manager, IFC Center

Through his leadership roles in film distribution and exhibition over the last 15 years, John Vanco has strived to connect great works of cinema with appreciative audiences. Greenwich Village's IFC Center, led by Vanco since its 2005 opening, is the bricks and mortar home of IFC Entertainment and serves as a focal point for the independent film community. As one of the founders of Cowboy Pictures, Vanco led the distribution efforts on behalf of dozens of foreign language, documentary and American fiction features, including works by Lynne Ramsay, David Gordon Green, Catherine Breillat and Shohei Imamura. Cowboy also programmed an innovative film calendar at a Manhattan cinema and managed the theatrical libraries of Janus Films and Pennebaker/Hegedus films. Previously, Vanco served in various capacities at Miramax, New Yorker Films and Fine Line Features.

Harris Dew

Director of Programs and Promotions, IFC Center

Harris Dew has worked in film programming and publicity for over 15 years, holding positions at New Yorker Films, the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Museum of Modern Art and Film Forum. He has a BA in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an MA in Film History from NYU.

SELECTED QUOTES

“Highbrow/Brilliant” - The Approval Matrix in New York Magazine

“Selective but eclectic, DOC NYC is like an early FM rock radio station, shuffling from CaptainBeefheart to the BeachBoys in order to promote and celebrate a culture of possibility.” – Eric Hynes, The Village Voice

“Filling an extended gaping hole for non-fiction filmmakers and fans that has existed in New York City, a new documentary festival is being launched in downtown Manhattan this fall.” – Brian Brooks, indieWIRE

“[Pearl Quick, one of the three students chronicled in To Be Heard] said that she nearly broke down watching the DOC NYC audience reaction to the film.” – Daniel Beekman, New York Daily News

“This ambitious new festival of nonfiction films grows out of the Stranger Than Fiction series at the IFC Center and includes a wide range of work across many different genres.” – Dave Kehr, The New York Times

“A bonanza for fans of documentaries…With such varied fare, DOC NYC is positioned to be another step in the delicate dance that allows documentarians to take just enough of the spotlight to garner attention.” – Nicolas Rapold, The Wall Street Journal

“Jam packed with so much appealing and necessary films that really I wish I was multiple people for this event alone.” – Christopher Campbell, Cinematical

“Thom Powers Founder ofStrangerThanFiction, programmer at TIFF, co-founder of CinemaEyeHonors, this year Thom expanded his base still further as one of the founders of theDOCNYC fest. Few have done as much to further the community and appreciation of film in NYC. He has helped to build an energetic and passionate doc community, and never stops thinking about how to extend it further. A man with a mission if there ever was.” – Ted Hope’s Brave Thinkers of Indie Film, 2010 Edition, The Huffington Post

“Thom Powers’ appetite for documentary knows no bounds...[DOC NYC is] a festival of riches for documentary lovers…A celebration of documentary media of all kinds.” – Mary Anderson Casavant, Filmmaker Magazine

“(Kevin) Brownlow is perhaps the most esoteric name on the list of honorary recipients of this year’s Governors Awards from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. While Jean-Luc Godard stole the headlines when the recipients of this year’s Honorary Oscars were revealed, Brownlow’s inclusion was given the proper attention in this year’s DOC NYC program.” – Daniel Loria, indieWIRE

“Some of these films are simply extraordinary, if you live in New York City, then I highly recommend that you check this film festival out.” – Rudie Obias, The Criterion Cast

“It's perhaps the biggest documentary festival launch in over five years and it's grabbing the prime real estate in early November that's soon to be vacated by primo UK Doc/Fest Sheffield.” – AJ Schnack, All These Wonderful Things

“The inaugural edition of DOCNYC kicked off in a big way, featuring Werner Herzog and his breathtaking 3-D documentary “Cave of Forgotten Dreams.” Opening with such a mammoth (no prehistory-pun intended) piece of work is quite a statement about the goals and scope of DOC NYC.” – Andrew Catauro, POV Blog

“DOC NYC is a welcome addition to the landscape of documentary film offerings. And it's great that they're thinking of the genre in a more expanded form, opening up the discussion to an interdisciplinary approach. It'll be great to see what unfolds next year.” – Kathy Brew, Documentary Magazine

“One of the beautiful things about this festival is that it’s all-inclusive in terms of audience outreach…one may safely say this looks like one festival that may be here to stay.” Carlos J. Segura, Cinespect

“DOC NYC, a festival dedicated to the form which taps directly into the primal urge at the spinal base of cinema: to watch.” – Chris Cabin, Slant Magazine

“Proof that there is an appetite and audience for the genre!” – Tanja Meding, Cinema Without Borders

“The program is fabulous!” – Jennifer Merin, About.com Documentaries
