The Valley, Anguilla –Nominations for the 2017 Annual Risk Reduction Recognition Awardis now being accepted by the Department of Disaster management Anguilla.

The Department of Disaster Management, under the auspices of the National Disaster Management Committee (NDMC), is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Annual Risk Reduction Recognition Award. The NDMC in its continuing quest to build a safe nation is again partnering with Platinum Sponsor Alliance Insurances Services in recognizing outstanding and innovative initiatives and measures in the advancement of disaster resilience and mitigation on Anguilla, by private and volunteer organizations.

The Annual Recognition Award will be a monetary award, specially designed plaque and a certificate of recognition presented to an individual or individuals, groups or institutions for excellence in innovation, outreach and effective collaboration in significantly improving safety and risk reducing measures during 2016.

According to Mr. Alwyn Richardson, Coordinator of the recognition award programme,

“The more governments, agencies, organizations, businesses and civil society understand risk and vulnerability, the better equipped they will be to mitigate disasters when they strike and save lives. The recent disasters in many parts of the worldshow the need to use knowledge, innovation and education to build a culture of safety and resilience at all levels”.

Director of Alliance Insurance Services, Ms. Sandra Lovell stated “Disaster Risk Reduction is also part of sustainable development and in order for development activities to be sustainable they must also reduce disaster risk. We must be cognizant of the fact that unsound development policies will increase disaster risk and disaster losses, therefore Disaster Risk Reduction involves every part of society, every part of government, and every part of the professional and private sector”.

Selection criteria and nominations forms can be found at the Post Office, various Government Offices, banks, hardware stores and public areas.

Nominations should be submitted by Friday March 08th, 2017 as instructed on the nomination form in order to facilitate a timely selection process. The Risk Reduction Award will be bestowed at the official award ceremony at the Alliance Insurance Services Ltd. Edwin Wallace Rey Drive George Hill, on March 29th, 2017.
