Press release on the Congress of the Cyprus Peace Council
Election of the leadership, new General Council and formation of the new CPC Secretariat
Nicosia, 13th July 2017
On Saturday 8th July 2017, the Regular Congress of the Cyprus Peace Council convened in Nicosia under the slogan "Peace with Justice in Cyprus and the World".
The Congress was attended by the former President of the CPC Donis Christofinis, the General Secretary of the World Federation of Democratic Youth WFDY Jose Angel Maury De Toro, theVice-president of the Women International Democratic Federation (WIDF) Skevi Koukouma and the Ambassador of the Cuban Revolution and daughter of the legendary revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara, Aleida Guevara Mars. Greetings were sent to our congress from the World Peace Council, as well as the peace movements from Cuba, Greece, Turkey, Syria, India, Nepal, Brazil, South Africa and the United States.
Congress representatives assessed, on the basis of the Action Report submitted, the Movement’s activity since the previous Congress and set out objectives and goals until the next Congress in the context of the ongoing political developments in Cyprus and the world.
As the Declaration that was unanimously approved by the Congress notes, the Cyprus Peace Council aiming at the development of the peace-loving, anti-imperialist, anti-war sentiment, but also of the sense of solidarity among the Cypriot people, addresses a call to its members, but also to all those people sensitive to the promotion of peace in Cyprus and the world, to support the efforts underway to upgrade its role for a more effective intervention by the movement.
By doing so, the Declaration notes that the struggles are strengthened for a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem, for freedom and the reunification of Cyprus under conditions of permanent peace and security, for the complete demilitarization of Cyprus, ridding the Middle East of weapons of mass destruction, for de-nuclearization and disarmament, the dissolution of the imperialist machine of NATO and an end to the imperialist wars, for cooperation with fraternal peace movements within the ranks of the World Peace Movement, for the promotion of peace in Cypriot society in cooperation with personalities from the fields of culture, education, the mass media and medicine.
In addition, the Congress adopted a resolution to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres.
Finally, the Congress elected a new General Council, consisting of 72 members. During its first session, the General Council elected the President, General Secretary and the new Secretariat of the CPC.
Stelios Sofokli, civil engineer and Visiting Lecturer at Neapolis University Paphos, was elected as the new President of the CPC and Fanis Christodoulou as the new General Secretary.
The other members of the Secretariat are Charis Pashias, Central Organizational Secretary, Marios Michailidis, Treasurer and Pieris, Konstantinos Anaxagorou, Christos Nikolaou, Mohamed Siapan, Giorgoula Zenonos, Severos Koulas and Dimitris Palmyris as members.

Curriculum Vitae of Stelios Sofokli, President of the CPC
Dr. Stelios Sofoklis was born on 31/12/1949 in Ktima of the District of Paphos. He graduated from Paphos B High School in 1968 and after his military service in 1969 he went to the German Democratic Republic to commence his studies. In 1974 he acquired the title of qualified civil engineer. From 1975 to 1977 he worked at Bauhaus University in Weimar and in 1982 he was awarded the title of Doctor in Civil Engineering. He is married and has three children. On his return to Cyprus in 1982, he was actively involved in the People's Movement and in the social affairs and struggles of his city and province. He is Chairman of the management committee of the Arts and Letters Centre of Paphos, Secretary of the Cultural Movement “ExArtis” and Secretary of the Board of the Paphos Branch of Photographic Society of Cyprus.
Dr. Stelios Sofokli has been an active member of the CPC since 2008 and has taken part in all the Movement’s activities. He was President of the District Branch of the CPC in Paphos, is a member of the CPC General Council since 2009 and a member of the Secretariat since 2012. He represented the CPC in international activities within the framework of the World Peace Council’s activities, as well as taking part in solidarity missions and regional conferences.
Curriculum Vitae of Fanis Christodoulou, General Secretary of the Cyprus Peace Council
Fanis Christodoulou was born in Ormidia in 1953 and lives in Aradippou. He is married to Emilia Michailova and they have two children. He studied at the Institute of International Tourism of Varna and then at the Academy of Social Sciences of Sofia. His involvement in public affairs began during the period of his studies in Bulgaria with his involvement in the student movement in Varna and Sofia, where he served as a member of Coordinating Committee of Foreign Students in Sofia.
He was Larnaca District Secretary of AKEL from 1989 until 2005, Central Organizing Secretary of AKEL from 2006 until 2008 and Nicosia-Kyrenia District Secretary from 2008 to 2010. He was a member of the Political Bureau of AKEL from 1995 until 2013.
He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Prometheus Research Institute and President of the “Anagennisis” Ayi Yiannis Sports Club of Larnaca.
Fanis Christodoulou is an active member of the CPC since the 1980’s participating in the organization of activities that marked the course of the peace movement in Cyprus, such as the mass peace marches held against the British bases and solidarity mobilizations with the people of Palestine, South Africa, Yugoslavia and Iraq.
