Science Fair winners receive awards at International Science Fair –
In a total of three award ceremonies, five students from the Detroit Metro area and three students from other regional areas in Michigan won numerous prestigious awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Portland, Oregon. These special awards were presented on May 13-14, 2004 and consisted of key awards from scientific, professional and educational organizations, governmental organizations, and overall category awards.
Julie Krugler, 18, Grosse Pointe North High School, Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Project title: “In Pursuit of Population III”
Earth and Space Category – Second Place Award of $1,500
American Astronomical Society and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific – Priscilla and Bart Bok Second Award of a $3,000 scholarship
U.S. Air Force – First Place Award of $3,000
Jeffrey Ferman, 17, Berkley High School, Berkley, Michigan. Project Title: “The Use of Computer Simulation to Investigate Hallway Congestion”
Computer Science Category – Third Place Award of $1,000
Samuel Bhagwat, 15, Winston Churchill High School, Livonia, Michigan. Project Title: “Determinantal Sequences of Polynomials”
Mathematics Category – Fourth Place Award of $500
Indiana University – Tuition scholarship of $5,000 per year for four years for a total value of $20,000
Asha Hosangadi, 16 and Pranali Koradia, 16, Detroit Country Day School, Beverly Hills, Michigan. Project Title: “Proving Piaget’s Principle”
Team Category – Behavioral and Social Sciences – Third Place Award of $1,000

Sam Howell, 17, Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy, Saginaw, Michigan (also the State of Michigan Science Fair Winner). Project Title: “Y-Chromosomal Detection of Foreign Lymphocytes Residing in a Subject Afflicted with Lymphomatoid Papulosis”
Medicine and Health Category – Fourth Place Award of $500
U.S. Army – Award of $3,000 in savings bonds, a certificate of achievement and a gold medallion
Aimee Covert, 17 and Nathan Hembroff-Formsma, 17, Battle Creek Area Math & Science Center, Battle Creek, Michigan. Project Title: “Analyzing Simple Linear Patterns in n-Dimensional k-Wrapping Space”
Team Category – Mathematics – Third Place Award of $1,000
