Engaging your colleagues with personal contact.
Discussing the checklist with your colleagues. We will provide demonstrations on how to have this conversation with surgical staff and physicians.
Hospitals will be sharing their experiences implementing the checklist. / Finish administering the culture survey over the next two weeks. Please send all of the completed surveys to our team at the Harvard School of Public Health.
If you haven’t already done so complete the OR Personnel Spreadsheet that you compiled for the culture survey. You will be using it for another purpose in the upcoming webinars.
Identify people that you think will be skeptical of using the checklist. We will discuss strategies to use when you talk to them next week. Please wait to talk to anybody until after the next webinar.

Identifying those people that might not want to use the checklist and strategies to use when you talk to them.
Bill will give a special presentation on today’s webinar that you can use to talk to surgeons.
Presentation Templates available for you to use to speak to your colleagues. / Use the OR Personnel list that you created for the administration of the culture survey and assign members of the implementation team to talk to everybody individually over the next couple of weeks.
If possible, talk to the people that you identified as possible skeptics. Make sure that you talk with them one-on-one prior to when you hold the large meeting.
Start talking to your colleagues in one-on-one conversations.
Mark your calendars to attend the 2012 Patient Safety Symposium on April 25th. Dr. Atul Gawande will be giving a keynote address and we will hold a breakout session for hospitals participating in this work. We hope to have representatives from all of the hospitals in South Carolina that have been doing this work. This will be an interactive breakout session and we hope to see you there.

Create a demonstration video using your hospital’s version of the South Carolina Surgical Safety Checklist. This video should be used to train your colleagues on how to use the checklist. Consider showing the video at the large meeting that you will hold.
Finalize your hospital’s checklist.
Decide if the checklist will be used in poster or paper form in your ORs. If your hospital will be using posters, look into options to have them made.
Think about ways to advertise the checklist in your hospital.
Optional Homework:
If you want to be part of the video competition, create and send your hospital’s checklist demonstration video and/or video of a poorly done Joint Commission Time-Out.
