Biological Safety Cabinets

·  The operator must wear PPE including a closed front over garment (i.e. surgical gown with full length sleeves OR long sleeved closed front laboratory coat) and non-latex gloves.

·  Turn OFF UV lamp if in use, and turn ON fluorescent light

·  Ensure sash is in the appropriate position

·  Check air intake and exhaust grilles for obstructions

·  Switch on blower

·  If the cabinet is equipped with an alarm, test the alarm and switch it to the “ON” position

·  Confirm inward airflow by holding a tissue at the at the middle of the edge of the viewing panel and ensure that it is drawn in

·  Disinfect the interior surfaces with a suitable, non-corrosive disinfectant. If bleach is used follow up with deionized water to remove residue.

·  Assemble only materials required for the procedure and load them into the cabinet;

a) do not obstruct the air grilles;

b) set up a clean area, a work area, and a dirty area

DO NOT OVERFILL THE BSC

·  Allow air to purge workspace for 5 minutes with no activity inside cabinet

SAFETY WARNINGS

Biological Safety Cabinet

·  Wear closed toed shoes, gloves and a closed front over garment as appropriate.

·  Perform operations behind the grill.

·  Avoid movement of materials and movement of hands and arms through the front access opening during use; when you do enter or exit the cabinet, do so straight and slowly; allow the cabinet to stabilize before resuming work.

·  Keep discarded, contaminated material to the rear of the cabinet in the dirty area; do not discard materials in containers outside of the cabinet while working.

·  Do not work with open flames inside the cabinet.

·  If there is a spill during use, surface decontaminate all objects in the cabinet; disinfect the working area of the cabinet while it is still in operation (do not turn the cabinet off). Report spill to Supervisor, McMaster OH&S office and the Biosafety office.

Post Use Instructions

Biological Safety Cabinets

·  Allow the cabinet to run for 5 minutes with no activity.

·  Close or cover open containers before removing them from the cabinet.

·  Surface-disinfect objects in contact with contaminated material before removal from the cabinet.

·  Remove contaminated gloves, and ensure that all materials are placed into biohazardous waste bags within the cabinet.

·  Wash hands

·  Put on clean gloves and ensure that all materials are placed into biohazard bags within the cabinet

·  Using a suitable non-corrosive disinfectant, disinfect interior surfaces of cabinet.

·  Periodically (once per month minimum) remove the work surface and disinfect the area beneath it (including the catch pan) and wipe the surface of the UV light with disinfectant.

·  Turn off the fluorescent light and cabinet blower when appropriate.

·  Turn on the UV light if appropriate (do not turn on when people are working close by).

Maintenance

1.  Decontaminate work surface daily or when used.

2. Document that this task has been completed on Biological Safety Cabinet Pre Use Checklist and Daily Maintenance Form.

3. Lift the grill and clean the surface under the grill at least once per month. Document on checklist.

4.  Inspections and Calibrations of Biological Safety Cabinets are performed annually by an external contractor. Refer to HEPA records for results of inspections.
