Using MCT Universal Programmer for Programming an EPROM

1. Have your EPROM clean. If you’re not sure, it is safe to get it erased anyway. The time to erase the EPROM is long, so you can save time by exchanging the EPROM at the Electronics shop, Room E-336. Ask Ralph or the assistant at the shop for the Exchange.

2. Use one of the four work stations with the programmer device in the room E-335.

3. Make sure that not only the computer is ON, but also the programmer device is Powered ON. You can check by looking at the Red light.

  1. Look for the Icon “TopMax for Windows” on the desktop or goto Start -> Programs -> Microlab ->EEtools->TopMax to open the programming software.
  1. Click on the Icon a window labeled “Topmax” appears on the screen. To check if the connections made properly goto “Config option” of the main menu and perform “Hardware Test”. If you get Test Pass then proceed, if not call the lab assistant.
  1. Now place the EPROM carefully into the IC slot provided on the programmer and see to that it is fixed properly.
  1. To have standard setting as that of the manufacturer goto Device -> Select and select the manufacturer and the device. Usually it is Intel – 2716.
  1. Perform Blank check by clicking “Blank option” provided on the tool bar for the ROM IC to be programmed. If the Blank check performed is Ok, then the IC is good to program. If you get Blank check error replace the IC.
  1. Go again to the “Config option” of the main menu and select “Config Option”. A window labeled config. option opens which provides various setting for the EPROM to be programmed. For basic programming so the following

Keep The Port option in --- Auto

The Gang, Split in --- 1 Gang & Byte

Keep all start addresses to zeros in Address and Auto Inc. option. Click Close

  1. To enter the program goto “Edit” option and start editing your program see to that the starting address is 00000. After entering close the window.
  1. Click on “Prog.” to program the ROM.
  1. Once programmed to read the contents of the ROM IC .Clear the Buffer first and then perform the “Read” operation. After this go back again to the buffer editor and check for the contents of the programmed ROM.
  1. If the contents of the Programmed ROM are the same as desired then EPROM is programmed successfully. If not call the lab assistant.
