Announcements for the week of September 7, 2008
Welcome to Emmanuel. Thank you for worshiping with us.
Please stop by the Welcome Center table.
A warm welcome to all visitors and newcomers to Emmanuel. We want to meet you and say “Welcome,” whether you are just visiting for the day or moving to the area. We are an open and affirming community, and all are welcome and invited to receive communion at our table. Please introduce yourself to one of the clergy or parishioners, and join us for coffee and goodies in the Narthex. Nursery care is available from 9:00am–noonin the Christian Education Building.
TODAY
Today is Welcome Home Sunday. In the midst of enjoying good food and reconnecting with old and new friends, consider serving with one of the ministry groups represented at today’s mini Ministry Fair in the narthex. Today, we’re focusing on our pastoral care ministries, our Christian formation program and liturgical ministries. Prayerfully consider serving God and your community by joining one of these great groups engaged in the work of bringing forth God’s reign.
There is noAdult Education this week. Meditation is in the Parlor from 9:15 to 10:15 am.
Today during church. You’ll notice some changes in the liturgy. Most are in Emmanuel’s usual pattern of using different prayer forms and service music for different liturgical seasons and transitions. Our tradition is rich with liturgy and music and by taking advantage of that we enrich our own common prayer life. At 10:30, you’ll also notice that the clergy are seated in the pews for the first half of the service—the Liturgy of the Word, and then move to the altar with the rest of the Eucharistic ministers during the Liturgy of the Table. Our Mission Statement, which in the past has been spoken near the end of the service, has been incorporated into a Collect, a prayer that “collects” the hope and prayers of the community, and offers them to God. We’ll say it together following the prayers of the people.
Other changes, particularly at 10:30 today, are about celebrating the multi-generational nature of our congregation. By offering an intergenerational Eucharist once a month, we give the oldest and youngest members of our community the chance to lead and participate in liturgy together. Once the children’s choir has a few rehearsals under their belts, they’ll be joining the Adult Choir on these Intergenerational Sundays as well. The sermon will be accessible for all ages and we’ll do a bit of teaching about our liturgy, perhaps answering the question, “Why in the world do we do that?”
Greening of Emmanuel:Many Emmanuelites have already marked (with a pin) where they live, on one of the maps in the narthex. This project is part of our 'Travel Survey', and its value depends on everyone's participation. These maps are in the west entrance hall and next week is the final week,so please take a moment to indicate your commute.
Support of Tent City: The people of Tent City have a real need for the following items: toiletries, men’s work clothes, and blankets. Used books are also welcome. Feel free to deliver any of these items in person directly to Tent City at the Methodist Church!
Emmanuel’s Farmer’s Market continues every Sunday. Look for fresh produce on the table by the coffee bar in the Narthex. Our thanks to Nile Clarke. Burt Johnson, Terry Ketcham, and Meg Lewis for sharing the bounty of their gardens. Please be generous, as all donations go to Northwest Harvest.
Community Conversations with Hunt. There is still room to sign up for the following dates in September: the 14th or 18th. In October: the 2nd, 4th, 11th, 12th, 16th, 19th, or 30th. In November: the 1st, 8th, to the 16th. A white binder with sign-up sheets is on the table near the 86th Ave. entrance.

Fighting with the Bible, Why Scripture Divides Us and How It Can Bring Us Together: Free Live Webcast Online Course with Donn Morgan, President and Dean, Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Mondays, 7:00 – 9:00 pm, September 15, 22, 29, and October 6.Have you ever been confused or frustrated by the way the Bible is used to prove others, including other Christians, wrong? Have you ever been angered by the way the Bible is seen to explain natural catastrophes as signs of God’s will? Or have you ever been opposed to those using the Bible to justify war… peace? Too often Christians take conflicting opinions and perspectives within the Bible and use them to fight with each other. This short course will explore the character and challenge of difference in the Bible, offering a way of using it to deal constructively with contemporary issues that often divide us. The Bible is both the problem and the solution for finding ways to move from division to communion. Each week will include readings from the Bible and Fighting with the Bible, as well as other suggested texts. Students will discuss the issues raised each week.

FYI
Thanks to Farmers Market volunteers—Cheryl Marshall reports a great day at last week’s Emmanuel Island Farmers Market. We had a good number of parishioners helping with logistics and a group that staffed a table with information about Emmanuel Church. From Edie, one of the event’s head organizers: Thank you soooooooo much for your time, the volunteers and the great energy and enthusiasm that everyone brought to the day yesterday! It was by far the best yet as far as operations go and I really want to thank you so much for being a big part of that!It was a pleasure to have you there all day and please let me know if you would like to do it again, anytime would be fine by me!!!

As you plan your fall activities, consider reserving Monday mornings to help take care of the Church grounds. Look for us in the gardens!! Questions— Bobbie Morris (206) 23-4923 or
The Social Action Commission is asking for donations of cereals and laundry soap for the month of September. Donations may be left in the big green bin just outside the Narthex.
Flower Committee. Working to make something beautiful to celebrate the beauty of God’s many gifts is the privilege of the flower committee. We are a small group who get together to plan in September, and then work how we each choose to make the weekly arrangements you enjoy. We are part of the Altar Guild, and enjoy their fellowship. We also enjoy the privilege of using the lovely Emmanuel grounds, and Bobbie Morris’s great selection of plants and flowers. We have many people qualified to help if you want to join us. If you are creative and love flowers, we promise that this will be something you will enjoy. It will make your life richer.
