Power Supply Software Design Tool (PI Expert Suite) version 8.0

1. Introduction

PI Expert power supply design software is an easy-to-use, time-saving innovative design tool created by Power Integrations. PI Expert is interactive software that takes user provided power supply specifications and generates a power conversion solution designed around one of Power Integrations’ power conversion ICs. The results produced by the software include a complete schematic of the supply, specifications for an optimized power transformer, which include a specified core, the number and order of windings with the number of turns and wire size for each winding, as well as helpful construction hints, adequate input capacitance - compiled from a list of industry standard electrolytic capacitors - and the appropriate PI device.

PI Expert provides a straightforward, easy to follow methodology for defining transformer requirements, bulk input capacitor, selection of the diodes/rectifiers, primary clamp and output capacitor, feedback control loop as well as heatsink information for output diodes and PI Components.

Further design and analysis is required to provide a complete power supply solution. This includes bench work and thermal verification of prototypes.

PI Expert Suite installation also includes the following software applications:

* PIXls - design spreadsheet application for advanced users that prefer a spreadsheet interface

* PI Viewer - an application for quick review of saved design results. PI Viewer provides a convenient means to review design files created with previous versions of PI Expert.

2. Installation Instructions

1) Uninstall all previous PI Expert versions. We can not guarantee correct operation of concurrently installed software versions

2) Exit all windows programs. Insert the PI Expert Suite installation software CD into the CD drive or run installation from PI WEB download.

3) The CD auto-run capability of Windows will start the PI Expert Suite Setup Menu program automatically. If it does not, select the Run... option from the taskbar Start Menu and type: "D:\Launch.exe" where D: is your CD-ROM drive.

4) Follow the step by step instructions on the PI Expert Suite setup screens to complete the software installation.

5) After you install the program you can run it by double clicking on the PI Expert or PIXls icons in the program menu.

6) Install Acrobat Reader if you want to access Power Integrations pdf files: Application Notes, Design Notes, Datasheets, Design Ideas, and others. These are located within PI Expert under the Help utilities heading(s).
