Purpose:

St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is a 100% smoke free hospital.

Procedure:

No one may smoke on any hospital property, including buildings, grounds and parking lots. The implementation and enforcement of the no smoking policy will be by posted signs, formal and informal information communications and where necessary taking appropriate disciplinary action. Managers and other persons in positions of authority are responsible to ensure the policy is applied within their respective areas.

Monitoring Compliance

Staff, volunteers, students and physicians who observe a person violating this policy are encouraged to direct the individual(s) who is smoking to the nearest public property if they wish to continue smoking.

Patients are to be notified of the “Smoke-FreeEnvironmentPolicy” upon registration. Once identified as a smoker through the nursing evaluation, the “Smoking Information Sheet” will be provided and discussed with the patient. Should patients wish to leave the property to smoke they must sign in and out of the unit when leaving as per current protocol.Staff is not responsible to take patients outside to smoke. Patients must be able to go out on their own accord or with a family member.

Continuing/Repeated Violations

  1. Violations by staff, physician, students and volunteers will be referred to the appropriate manager who will initiate a corrective action plan as outlined in the “Employee Corrective Action Policy”.
  2. Violations by visitorsare reported to security/manager who will direct them to leave hospital property. Should they continue to refuse the person may be charged by security under the “Trespass to Property Act”.
  3. Violations by patientswill have a notation made in their health record for discussion with the attending physician, with a subject notification to the Vice President of Clinical Services and Chief of Staff.
  4. Violations by contractors will be referred to manager of area of work who will initiate the “Code of Conduct Agreement”.

Non compliance will be referred to a manager and/or security; and should be entered as an event into Risk Monitor Pro reporting system.
