DEPARTMENT PROFILE 2016-17

The College

Started in the year 1972, and affiliated to the University of Calicut, Govt. College,Malappuram, offers four postgraduate and nine undergraduate programs. Besides the principal, there are 55 regular teachers and 7 guest teachers in the College. There are 30 nonteaching staff including the librarian. The total student strength in all programs is 1360. Library, Canteen, INFLIBNET, EDUSAT, recreation rooms, garden, playground etc. are among the common facilities.

The Department

The Department of English, though started at the inception of the college in 1972, started offering an independent academic program only in 2012-13 when the postgraduate program in English Language and Literature was sanctioned. Since then, the department has been catering to the diverse academic requirements of the students in the postgraduate level in a number of ways including lectures, seminars, workshops, debates, guest talks, study tours, literary forum activities, assignment tasks, quizzes etc. Two batches of postgraduates have successfully passed out by now. The department has an added benefit of the on and off presence of about six research scholars.

Faculty Details (2016-17)

Currently, there are five permanent faculty members and three guest faculty members in the department. Two of the permanent faculty members have doctoral degrees, one of them is a research supervisor, and the two others have ongoing research undertakings leading to PhD.One of the permanent faculty is visually challenged and with unusual abilities.

Postgraduate Department of English is gearing up for launching an academic journal with contributions from students, researchers, and faculty. Extension Activities

The Postgraduate Department of English, especially its faculty, carries out extension activities of diverse nature as detailed below:

  1. Dr.ZainulAbidKotta, Head of the Department, serves as member of syndicate, senate, several academic bodies of the university, autonomous colleges,
  2. He contributes to journals and periodicals and edits an International research journal etc.
  3. Serves as special officer of the newly started women’s college at Malappuram
  4. Dr. A. I. Vilayathullah, a senior faculty, undertakes academic tasks like giving extension lectures, faculty training programs as Resource Person in diverse places in India (Tamil Nadu) and abroad (in UAE).
  5. Spearheads an amateur community research initiative named Tibyan Institute.
  6. Organizes academic debates and discussions
  7. Mr.Mammed N., Assistant Professor, plays a significant role in organizing film festivals in the regional and state-level initiatives
  8. Contributes to festival bulletins, festival books, Magazines, Open Forum, and Meet the Director events
  9. He serves as Resource Person for training competitive examination (like UGC-NET) candidates.
  10. Gives lectures on film-related topics
  11. Handles film related columns in magazines (LittlleMasika and Chenda)

Interdisciplinary Research

The postgraduate department of English promotes interdisciplinary research in various levels. Our postgraduate students are being given opportunities to carry out dissertation projects in the interdisciplinary fields. In fact, most of their works are interdisciplinary in nature. Seminars, lectures, workshops etc. organized by the department almost always explore interdisciplinary areas of research. The six research scholars working under the head of the department are exploring interdisciplinary areas like Transgender studies, Eco-criticism, Non-English cultures, Dalit studies, hybridity in Indian etc. Besides, our faculty have successfully carried out projects (MRP) in areas of documentary movies, gender-equality issues, post-colonialism etc. Further to that the visually challenged faculty Mr. Akbar C., has identified a peculiar area of research interest i.e. disability studies and is working in the area.

Mentoring & Remedial Coaching

Postgraduate Department of English offers just one exclusive program i.e. M. A. in English Language & Literature. The department has assigned tutorial tasks of the students of this program to regular faculty in service (Dr. A. I. VilayathullahMr.Mammed N.). They regularly carry out mentoring tasks and remedial supports to the students identified to require such support. As for the Undergraduate students, mentoring service and tutorial support are being imparted as part of SSP, WWS, ASAP programs etc. Apart from this, the department identifies academically weak students and intensify the effectiveness of internal assignments, project works, internal exams, special support sessions etc.

ACHIEVEMENTS, PRIZES, & AWARDS

Mr.Pranavan K., a postgraduate student of the department won 1st Prize in English elocution, English essay writing, and Englishdebating in the zonal level competitions conducted by the Calicut University Students’ Union as part of the Union Arts & Sports Festival in the academic year 2015-16

PARENTAL FEEDBACK

The department periodically carries out sessions with the parents of the students in the department and takes a feedback from them on academic as well as non-academic issues pertaining to their children in the college. This goes a big way in identifying the shortcomings, problems etc. and in finding genuine solutions on time.

VIVA VOCE FEEDBACK

The department takes feedbacks from postgraduate students on their viva voce examinations carried out by the examiners from the university to ensure that they have been able to deal with such situations in the proper way. This is besides the coaching sessions on oral examinations given to them in advance. The feedbacks are carefully kept in the department and are made accessible to students of subsequent batches to learn from the pitfalls of their seniors.

ENGLISH LITERARY FORUM (ELF)

English Literary Forum (ELF) is an initiative of the postgraduate students of the department. It organizes activities in consultation with the head and the faculty of the department. Currently the secretary of ELF is Ms.Aiswarya P. of 2014-16 batch.

Forum Sessions: ELF organizes a weekly session of the two batches of the postgraduate programme every Wednesday from 02. 30 p.m. to 03. 30 p.m. Such sessions are generally for academic and non-academic presentations of students, entertainment events, quizzes, language skills games etc. and are often attended by the faculty.

ELF Academic Events: Occasionally the ELF organizes guest talks, interactive sessions etc. It also organizes postgraduate seminars for the benefit of the students.

Pricks & Kicks: ELF has a notice board sarcastically named Pricks and Kicksfor its announcements and also for displaying curiosity items.

ELF Textbook Library & Resource Room: Another undertaking of the ELF is the textbook library and resource room. It’s a library built up with books donated by the department’s alumni, faculty, research scholars, and the postgraduate students currently on the roll in response to ELF scheme of donate /sponsor a book. It is mainly meant for the benefit of the financially backward students of the department. Besides the textbooks, the resource room provides the facility of a computer system with internet connection and a printer exclusively for the academic requirements of the postgraduate students.

Junk Paper Project: Another very innovative and useful undertaking of ELF is the Junk Paper Project. It’s a scheme of collecting the junk papers in the department such as students’ exam papers, class assignment papers etc. for selling out to generate fund for buying books for the Textbook Library.

Feedback Box:The department has set up a feedback box in the office for students to put their unnamed / named complaints, grievances, academic feedbacks etc.

Welcome and See-Off Parties: Besides the above, ELF organizes welcome party for the newly admitted students of the postgraduate program and see off party for the passing out students.
