  • The United States wanted to not only maintain its sphere of influence in the Western Hemisphere and Asia, but also to construct a worldwide system of free markets.

Soviet Union /
  • The Soviet Union wanted to dominate Eastern Europe. They wanted to promote Marxism around the world without engaging in too many direct involvements in other countries’ affairs.

NATO- The Truman administration set up a military alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) that initially included the United States, Canada, Great Britain, France, West Germany, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Italy. Later, NATO admitted Greece and Turkey. NATO countries agreed to give military aid to each other if one member was attacked.
The Warsaw pact-
In 1955, the Soviet Union countered NATO with the creation of its own military alliance system called the Warsaw Pact. The Warsaw Pact integrated the armed forces of Eastern Europe into a unified force under Soviet command. The Soviet Union recognized East Germany as an independent country and admitted it into the Warsaw Pact.

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first satellite into orbit around the Earth. Its name was Sputnik I. Sputnik I was about the size of a beach ball and weighed 183.9 pounds. It took about 98 minutes to orbit the whole Earth.The United States was alarmed by the Sputnik launch. Having prided themselves in leading the world in science and technology, they enthusiastically supported President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s decision to pour money into scientific research.By landing on the moon, the United States effectively “won” the space race that had begun with Sputnik’s launch in 1957. For their part, the Soviets made four failed attempts to launch a lunar landing craft between 1969 and 1972, including a spectacular launch-pad explosion in July 1969.
