Post: LEARNING SUPPORT PRACTITIONER (LSP)

To provide support for students with a high level of need

Responsible To: Head of Student Assessment and support

Summary of Post:To support students who have a high level of need on a range of vocational, life skills and maths and English programmes, providing support on a 1:1 basis, or as a group as required.

To work as a member of a team to support students who have learning difficulties and disabilities: Autistic SpectrumCondition, Behaviour Social Emotional Disorder, Global learning delay, Language & Communication, Sensory, Physical needs

Duties and responsibilities

  1. To participate in the Staff Support & Development appraisal Scheme and to undertake training based on individual and service needs.
  2. To take a lead in creating a positive, inclusive ethos that challenges discrimination and promotes equality and diversity.
  3. To actively partake in the college quality assurance processes, this will include the annual LSP observation process.
  1. To provide support throughout the year for students with a range of needs in a vocational, life skills, academic or work related training environment. This will include supporting at: enrolment, induction, initial assessment, on programme and breaks for vulnerable students who require support during unstructured times of the day.
  1. To support the management of students behaviour in class and take appropriate action in liaison with the lecturer, working within the college disciplinary process and rules for student conduct.
  1. To support students to enable them to identify their key areas to develop so that they learn to manage their response to situations and behaviour in order to progress their learning
  1. To support the teaching team to implement the common use of strategies to motivate and engage students
  1. Contribute to the monitoring of progress and student reviews by completing student records and providing information to the tutor or facilitator by completing a review in line with College policy on tutorials
  1. To actively promote the safety and wellbeing of students in all activities and contribute to the review of student risk assessments
  1. To work with guidance to ensure the results of the Initial assessment are used in the planning of support and when addressing differentiation of pace and materials.
  1. To work with the Tutors to produce course related materials that are accessible to the student
  1. To be informed of any assistive technology available and encourage students to maximise the use of these resources to promote independent learning
  1. To assist with the mobility and the specific medical/hygiene needs of a student as required, this may include personal care
  1. To support 1-1 travel training in ‘real time’ where studentsare being supported to become independent travellers
  1. Where appropriate work with other team members to staff the base area for students with high anxiety
  1. To attend Team meetings to ensure effective communication between Student Support and the curriculum and encourage students to participate in surveys, questionnaires and student focus groups
  1. Provide information from support records for the students individual learning plan and EHC Plans

To carry out such other duties appropriate to the job and individual skills and experience as may be required by the Head of Student Assessment and Support. This may include occasional working and training at other campuses.
