Post Doctoral Fellow – Transboundary Water Management(Sri Lanka/Africa)
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is seeking an innovative, self-motivated, scientifically outstanding, and highly competent candidate for a postdoctoral fellow position in Transboundary Water Management. The successful candidate will initially be based in the Global Research Division at IWMI’s Headquarters in Colombo, Sri Lanka, but may later be located in one of our offices in Africa. The Postdoctoral Fellow, under the overall guidance of the Head, Policies and Institutions Research Group, will play a significant role in the development and expansion of the institute’s transboundary waters program and has the opportunity to make long lasting contributions to the fields of transboundary water management research in general and on the connections between transboundary water management, agricultural development and natural resource sustainability specifically.
The Post Doctoral Fellow is expected to contribute to the transboundary waters program and provide insights into role and possibilities for transboundary water research to improve other project outcomes by:
- Developing, analyzing and deriving lessons from the catalogue of existing transboundary water law in conjunction with key IWMI partners;
- Developing and applying concepts and theories related to transboundary water cooperation and management to one or more of IWMI’s existing projects, most likely in Africa.
- Co-developing and overseeing an intern and students program; and
- Producing internationally peer-reviewed publications and disseminating findings by attending international forums and through other outlets.
We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications and experience:
- PhD in field closely allied with transboundary water management, economics, cooperation or law. In exceptional cases, a master’s or equivalent degree and demonstrated knowledge of relevant issues will be considered.
Skills and abilities in the following areas would be required:
- Passion for the subject matter, drive to further the state of knowledge and make a difference on the ground;
- Excellent writing skills;
- Analytical mind and a learning attitude;
- Fluency in spoken English;
- Willingness to travel;
- Ability and desire to work in a multi-cultural environment.
IWMI ( is a non-profit scientific organization funded by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). IWMI’s research agenda is organized around four priority themes covering key issues relating to land, water, livelihoods, health and environment. The Institute concentrates on water and related land management challenges faced by poor rural communities. The challenges are those that affect their nutrition, livelihoods and health, as well as the integrity of environmental services on which these depend. IWMI works through collaborative research with partners in the North and South, to develop tools and practices to help developing countries eradicate poverty and better manage their water and land resources. The immediate target groups of IWMI’s research include the scientific community, policy makers, project implementers and individual farmers.
Post doctoral contracts are available for two years and are non-renewable.
