Positional Sense: Fly Half

The fly half is the key decision maker in the game. He needs to be able to read the game and make the right decisions in each situation. He needs to be able to give a variety of passes off both hands and execute a variety of kicks at the right time.

Physical Importance

The fly half must always be a running threat to the opposition defence. This makes sure the midfield defence and the back row are held and creates space and time for the outside backs to attack. To achieve this he needs to be able to change pace and direction while accelerating with the ball in hand.

Key Technique

The fly half should aim to catch the ball from the scrum half as early as possible. He has to reach out towards the pass and watch the ball cleanly into his hands. His fingers and wrists absorb the power of the pass and allow him to control the ball. He needs to keep the ball away from his body in two hands to keep his passing options open.

Tactical Nous

Calling the right move in the right situation takes an understanding of the game which comes from experience of playing.

Mental Strength

The fly half needs to be able to relax between periods of intense activity to make effective well thought out decisions. There are some excellent simple relaxation strategies that can be used on the pitch before key decision making moments.

Breathing focus: Spend 10 to 20 seconds focusing on the breathing. Concentrate on taking deep breaths and slowing the breathing rate.

Neck stretch: Tension which builds up in the neck under pressure can affect physical and mental performance. Players should slowly stretch the neck forwards, backwards and side to side holding each position for three seconds. They should look left and right holding each position for three seconds. They can use their fingertips to gently massage the soft area just behind the ears. The release of tension will enable the player to recover quickly and prepare for the next phase of play.
