Position Title: School Principal

Reports To: Director of Education

Position Type: Full time/Term

Hours of Work: 35 Hours Per Week

Summary:

Working out of the Tsay Keh Dene School located in the community of Tsay Keh Dene, the School Principal is required to follow all policies and procedures, and to comply with the instructions and directives from the Director of Education.The High School Teacher plans, instructs and organizes instructional environments to help students learn subject matter and skills which will contribute to their educational and social development. He/she coordinates and directs the activities of Teacher Assistants and other school staff. The Teacher develops and maintains key relationships with the Director of Education, parents/guardians, students, other staff, community members and the Teacher Regulation Branch. He/she assesses the progress of students and reports to the school and parents. Performs other related duties as required.

Job Duties:

Planning, Preparing and Delivery of Learning Instruction

  • Plan and prepare courses and subjects in accordance with policy and curriculum,
  • Adapt learning and outcomes to match the students they instruct
  • Incorporate First Nations curriculum and ways of learning into all class programs
  • Incorporate student centred learning across the curriculum
  • Establish effective working relationships with other staff
  • Contribute to the effective organization and running of the school
  • Administer learning according to identified educational needs of assigned students
  • Invest in personal professional development that will positively impact student learning outcome.

Students, Classroom and Instruction Management

  • Operate at all times with the stated school policies, practices and growth plan.
  • Create best practices in classroom management
  • Set attainable and measurable expectations for student behaviour and interactions
  • Create a warm and welcoming learning environmentfor students and parents
  • Working with students, create clear and effective learning and assessment criteria
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of students under instruction

Co-curricular Responsibilities

  • Teaching, the pupils assigned to them including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupils in the school
  • Actively uses the concept of Assessment for Learning for all students
  • Adapt instruction to meet identified student needs
  • Teach English and Math in relation to College of New Caledonia’s Career Preparation (CCP) program at the fundamental, intermediate, advanced and provincial levels
  • Establish an effective working relationship with education assistant and other staff
  • Connect with the community in the integration of pedagogy and the community views and directions of education
  • Participate in community programs that link the school to the larger community
  • Project positive role model image to the community

Reporting, Records and Administrative Responsibilities

  • Keep accurate and timely records of student progress and make that information available to school officials, parents and students
  • Develop and use effective assessment practices based upon best practices and school policy
  • Communicate program design and outcomes effectively to parents, students, Executive Director and Chief and Council
  • Provide timelyreports, both verbally in meetings and in writing, to students, parents and school officials regarding the progress of the students assigned to them
  • Work effectively and cooperatively with school leaders and other professionals in the development and implementation of best practices in pedagogy
  • Participate in regular meeting with parents, PAC, other staff or community members to discuss and implement best practices in education

Requirements:

Education and experience

  • University Degree, preferably a Master’s in either English or Math
  • Member of Teacher Regulation Branch (or working towards membership)
  • Qualified to teach in Canada.
  • 3 to 5 years of teaching experience with youth and adults.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • An understanding of adult Aboriginal student needs.
  • Proven ability to successfully work and interact with children, youth, parents/guardians, staff and visitors in a sensitive, effective and professional manner.
  • Good organizational, time management and prioritization skills.
  • Strong morals and work ethics, sound judgement and reasoning skills, along with a commitment to discretion and privacy.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Physically able to perform all assigned tasks.
  • Criminal record check clearance
  • Flexibility in the delivery of learning instruction

Work Conditions:

  • Must be willing to work and live in a remote northern community.
