Position Title: Pastoral Leader for Youth Ministries

Goals and Functions:

The Pastoral Leader for Youth Ministries ministers to the youth of the parish (members who are in elementary, middle and high schools). The PLYM works with parents and other adults to organize and implement programs and experiences for the youth based on the eight components of youth ministry outlines by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ document Renewing the Vision: advocacy, catechesis, community life, evangelization, justice and service, leadership development, pastoral care, and prayer and worship.

Qualifications:

  • Active member of the Roman Catholic Church of sound character and deep faith
  • A genuine concern for the youth of the Church
  • Bachelor’s degree, or credits toward the degree, in theology with an emphasis in catechetics, youth ministry, pastoral ministry or related field (preferred)
  • Ability to evaluate and implement faith formation curriculum
  • Ability to implement creative programs for youth
  • Ability to coordinate activities involving teens, parents and volunteers
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lead and play music, preferred

Hours Worked:Full time, includes evenings and weekends; salaried

Reports to:Pastoral Associate

Supervises:Volunteer catechists and aides; volunteers

Parish Committee Assignments:

  • Faith Formation Committee
  • Youth Ministry Council

Duties and Responsibilities:

Youth Ministry

  • Be present, and coordinate volunteers to be present, to youth at a variety of organized social, extracurricular and athletic functions of the local schools
  • Develop, implement and evaluate goals, objectives and strategies to reflect the vision for youth ministry outlined by the USCCB and the Diocese of Saint Cloud
  • Supervise and coordinate the planning and scheduling of youth activities
  • Organize regular youth group meetings
  • Develop and coordinate an adult core team for youth ministry
  • Screen, train, and evaluate adults who minister among the youth
  • Provide liturgical and spiritual opportunities for youth
  • Provide opportunities for youth to serve within the parish and the larger community
  • Be available to youth for listening, counseling and referrals to professionals
  • Evaluate the youth ministry program for areas of developments and strengths
  • Provide youth with opportunities to develop leadership skills in the parish

Family Faith Formation

  • Coordinate the Family Faith Formation Program
  • Serve as a Core Teacher
  • Coordinate the sacramental preparation program for Confirmation with the PLSM and PLDF.
  • Interview youth, especially Confirmation Candidates, with PLSM
  • Plan and implement Confirmation Mass with Pastor, PLLM, PLSM, and PLDF

Administrative

  • Develop and monitor budgets for areas of youth ministries
  • Publicize activities and events relevant to youth ministries
  • Participate in parish staff meetings once a week
  • Network and collaborate when feasible with other youth ministers
  • Collaborate with parish staff members
  • Maintain records appropriate to youth ministries
  • Supervise and coordinate the scheduling of youth-related activities
  • Coordinates with the Pastoral Associate Safe-Environment training for all volunteers
  • Attend assigned committee meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

Continuing Education:

  • Maintain the level of knowledge and skills required to serve as PLYM
  • Attend workshops or conventions
  • Read material related to the profession
  • Pursue further education, spiritual and professional growth
  • Participate in local, diocesan, regional, and national professional organizations, as appropriate
