About the Aboriginal Sport & Wellness Council of Ontario (ASWCO):

ASWCO is the Provincial Territorial Aboriginal Sport Body (PTASB) for Ontario and provides input and services around the North American Indigenous Games, National Aboriginal Hockey Championships and many other regional games throughout Ontario and Canada.

ASWCO promotes healthy living and offers training, certifications and support for coaches, athletes and other organizations in each of the 6 regions: Northwest, North Central, Northeast, Central, Southeast and Southwest Ontario.

Summary:

Opportunity for eligible students to be exposed to a variety of tasks related to sport, health, aboriginal culture and wellness. The successful applicant(s) will be involved in a number of projects that will test their learning and equip them with the skills to be an effective employee in the sport industry. The applicant(s) will gain an understanding of the Aboriginal sport landscape, including how it differs from traditional sport in Ontario. They will get first-hand experience in activities such as event planning and management, research, programming, and potentially grant writing and execution. They will work closely with our two senior managers, 6 regional coordinators and all additional staff. In summary, this opportunity will be all encompassing for the applicant(s), giving them the chance to develop their knowledge, skills and abilities in an assortment of areas, while being involved in the development of a growing organization.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Work with senior managers and regional coordinators to deliver a series of Winter Sport and Culture Festivals across the province.
  • Assist with the planning and management of a new Ontario Aboriginal Athlete Recognition Program.
  • Assist with the planning of 2017 Multi-Sport and Culture Camps.
  • Support the planning and development of the 2017 North American Indigenous Games and the 2018 Masters Aboriginal Games.
  • Assist in research that will be used for ASWCO to develop new programs.
  • Work within the Personal Health & Wellness Rewards Program.

Qualifications:

  • Must currently be in a post-secondary program in a related field which requires an internship/co-op placement
  • Possess a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Event management experience is considered an asset.
  • Self-motivated and enthusiastic individual who can work independently.
  • Strong co-ordination skills as you may be working with individuals in other cities.
  • Strong attention to details.
  • Knowledge of aboriginal sport and culture is considered an asset.
