Policy 2410 – High School Graduation Requirements

The Board of Directors shall award a regular high school diploma to every student enrolled in Kiona-Benton High School who meets the requirements of graduation as set forth by the Board of Directors. Only one diploma shall be awarded with no distinctions being made between the various programs of instruction, which the student may have pursued.

Students in all graduating classes must pass HSPE Reading and Writing tests.Class of 2013 and 2014are required to pass Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II or an approved third math credit, and pass ONE End of Course math test (Algebra or Geometry) or an approved alternative. Class of 2015 and beyond must pass three math courses, an EOC test in Science, and two EOC math tests (Algebra and Geometry). For the Class of 2016 and beyond, Washington History becomes a non-credit requirement, and there are additional requirements for .5 Civics credit and a 3rd Lab Science credit for college admission.
**These classes include a required written paper and community service hours.
1.Occupational/Vocational Education: 2 credits required
Classes accepted to meet the Occupational/Vocational requirement include all Business, Agriculture, Woods, Welding, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Tri-Tech Skill Center courses. Also included are IIS and COE approved (KB District Policy 241) work experience.
2.Fine Arts: 1 credit required
Classes accepted to meet the Fine Arts requirement include drama, art, music, VA Web Design, and drafting courses. Web Design and Drafting may not be accepted by all four-year colleges as a fine arts credit, but they are considered fine arts at our high school.
3.Physical Education: 1.5 credits required
Students MUST earn a minimum of .5 PE credit through P.E., not weights. The other 1.0 credit can be earned through weights or P.E. classes.
4.Band and Choir: Electives; may count as Fine Arts credit
Enrollment in either music class fulfills the 1.0 fine arts requirement.
5.Teacher and Office Aides: Elective. Does not count as vocational credit.
Credit is .25 for each semester for Teacher/Office aides.
6.Lab (Science and Family/Consumer science labs) and Library Aides: Elective.
Credit is 0.5 for each semester. Does not count as vocational credit.
7.Inquiry Into Science and Cooperative Office Education: Elective.
Students who meet the workhour requirement, can apply for one (1) credit toward meeting the Occupational/Vocational Education requirement.
8.Accounting Cross Crediting:
Students who have earned one (1) math credit from any math course listed can apply one (1) Accounting Math credit toward meeting the required math credits.
9.Correspondence Courses and Alternative Programs:
A correspondence course is defined as an independent study program planned and administered by the School District. Students can earn a maximum of four (4) credits toward the total credits required for graduation; exceptions must be approved by the Superintendent. Credits earned through approved alternative programs will be accepted.
10.High School Credit for Middle School Courses:
Students in grades 7 or 8 who successfully complete a high school course taken with high school students or students who complete an equivalent high school course while in middle school may request high school credit by completing Form 2410A.
Washington State History: Students will satisfy the .5 Washington History requirement, with a minimum grade of “D”. WA History becomes a "non-credit" requirement after 2015.
11.Running Start:
Students in grades 11 and 12, who have met all Running Start requirements, can earn both high school and college credit simultaneously. Five (5) college credits equal one (1) high school credit; three (3) college credits equal (.5) high school credit.
12.Tri-Tech Skill Center:
Students will earn (1.5) credit for each AM or PM semester successfully completed (credit is determined and awarded by Tri-Tech).

13.Request for No Credit for a repeated course:

Students that repeat a course for the purpose of improving their grade may request that the credit and grade not be counted against their grade point average (GPA) by completing Form 2410B.

Satisfactory completion of the objectives in an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) shall serve as the basis for determining completion of a course.

A student shall be issued a diploma after completing the District's requirements for graduation. A student shall also be advised that he/she may receive a final transcript, if requested, prior to July 1 following graduation.

However, a student's diploma may be withheld until the student pays for any school property that has been lost or willfully damaged. Upon payment for damages, or the equivalency through voluntary work, the diploma will be released. When the damages or fines do not exceed $100, the student or his/her parents shall have the right to appeal using the same process as used for short-term suspension (Policy No. 3241). When damages are in excess of $100, the appeal process for the long-term suspension (Policy No. 3241) shall apply.

Graduation requirements in effect when a student first enrolls in high school shall be in effect until that student graduates unless such period is in excess of ten years.

In the event that other forms of corrective action are imposed for violations of school rules, the student may be denied participation in graduation ceremonies. Such exclusion shall be regarded as a school suspension. In such instances, the diploma will be granted.
