Planning for Social Communication & Interaction group

When will the activity be? / Session 3: / Where will the activity be?
Who is the activity for? / Who will run the activity? / Who will observe the activity?
How long will the session last? / About 15 minutes
How do I introduce the session?
Have the items ready in a bag & approach each child individually. Show them the bag & say ‘look what’s inside, come & see’ & lead them to the area where you are holding the session. If a child is reluctant to come, show a toy from the bag.
BE FLEXIBLE – if an activity is not going well, move onto the next activity; if an activity lasts longer than expected don’t worry if you don’t get through all your planned games
Use gesture and signs as you speak
What will I do? / What do I need to prepare?
What will they use?
  • Greeting song – hold up the ‘hello’ prompt card & follow the instructions on the back. Sing song to tune of ‘Nice one Cyril’
  • Awareness of each other/turn-taking game – ‘I’m driving in my car’. Fill a drawstring bag with toy vehicles such as car, train, motorbike – hold up prompt card for bag. Say ‘what’s in the bag?’ pass bag to a child, say ‘…’s turn’. Prompt child to take a vehicle from the bag. Say ‘… found a car’. Prompt child to show others. Sing ‘I’m driving in my car/other vehicle’. Say ‘whose turn now? & prompt child to point to or name another child. Praise good waiting. Pass bag to child. Repeat previous actions for next child, & so on
  • Responding to key sounds – Tambourine game – me to lead – ask children to ‘Look, listen & wait’. Tap tambourine & prompt children to jump. Children take turns to tap tambourine whilst other children look, listen & jump
  • Turn-taking game – using a different puzzle from last week – show prompt card then empty jigsaw tray into the bag. Say ‘look no pictures. Where are they?’ shake bag with pieces. Pass the bag to a child & say …’s turn’. Prompt child to take a piece from the bag. Say ‘... found a ……’ (name by noise, sign or word). Prompt child to show the others the piece & put it in the tray. Take turns to complete the tray. If children remain interested take turns to put the pieces back in the bag. Say ‘Put ‘....in the bag’
  • Awareness of others – who’s hiding? – lead adult to put scarf over head. Supporting adult says ‘who’s gone? Elisabeth’s gone’. Prompt a child to remove the scarf and say ‘it’s Elisabeth’. Children to take turns – only put scarf over child’s head if they are happy for you to do so
  • Goodbye song - say ‘Goodbye, toys gone’. Sing ’goodbye’ song following the same instructions as the greeting song. Sing to every child & adult in the group.

What might they learn or be able to do that is new, or needs more practice to master?
To enable less participative children to develop the skills they need to join in, & giving them the experience of being an active participant by:
  • Becoming more aware of each other
  • Learning and using each other’s names
  • Learning how to take turns
  • Making choices
  • Following the leader and giving the lead

How will I help and support children who struggle with the activity? / How can make the activity more challenging for children?
What went well?
What will I do differently next time?
